Personal Web Space

Non-Official Information

Excerpted from the university disclaimer on Web content:

The following Web-publishing environments are among those not considered official.  The persons who maintain pages in these environments control their own content and do not speak for the University.

students.umw.edu (personal Web pages for students, clubs, and organizations)

people.umw.edu, users.umw.edu, www1.umw.edu, www2.umw.edu, www3.umw.edu, www4.umw.edu, and www5.umw.edu (personal Web pages for faculty and staff)

Whenever a new student, faculty, or staff member arrives at the University, he or she is granted space on the network servers where files can be stored (faculty and staff: 30 mb, students: 15 mb). This space is in directory that is named after your "User ID". Your User ID is the 8-letter word preceding the "@umw.edu" in your e-mail address.

That directory can serve a dual purpose. It can also host Web pages that you create. Only you have access to that folder, so only you can edit these pages. By the same token, although these pages are seen by the outside world on the Web, they are not considered official pages of the University, and do not speak for the University. As a result, University logos are not permitted to be used in personal Web space.

Now that we're clear on the role of personal pages, how do you access this space? Read on>
