Accessing Banner the First Time - Java
The workstation configuration for users that will be using Banner 7 should include the Java Plug-in runtime to support the running of the Oracle forms.
The Java plug-in is software that must reside on all Windows machines that use Banner for student, human resources, payroll, advancement and finance business transactions. It runs automatically when you use your web browser to login to Banner. It is used for connectivity between a Windows-based client and Oracle Application Forms.
The Java plug-in is used to run Java applets on a desktop client, and it provides a delivery mechanism that enables Oracle forms to be run from within a browser in a stable and supported manner.
The first time you login to Banner 7 the browser will notify you that the plug-in is required and walk you through the steps for loading the necessary plug-in.
Some users will experience difficulties installing the Java client automatically. Instructions for installing the client manually are found here.
Internet Explorer:
- Start Internet Explorer.
- Go to http://umw.edu/banner
- Choose INB.
- If Java is not installed, you’ll get a notice. Click on the message in the alert box. The installation will begin.

- Click on Install ActiveX Control.

- Click on Install to install the software.

- Accept the License Agreement terms and click Next.

- Select the Typical Setup Type and click Next.

- Finish the installation.

INSTALLING THE JAVA CLIENT MANUALLY
Some users have experienced difficulty with the automated installation of the Java client, and have had better success with the manual installation of the client. To install the Java client manual:
- Go to http://www.umw.edu/banner
- Click on the Java Image on the right side of the page.

- Click on Run when asked if you want or Run or Save the file.

- Click on Run when asked if you want to Run the software.

- Accept the license agreement, then click on the Next button.

- Choose a Typical Installation, then click on Next.

- When the installation is done, click on the Finish button.

Mozilla Firefox:
- Right-click on the Start menu and choose Explore to open Windows Explorer.

- Locate and copy the following file: C:\Program Files\Oracle\JInitiator 1.3.1.18\bin\NPJinit13118.dll
- Open the following directory and paste the file into it: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\
- Exit Firefox/Mozilla, then re-open it. This process will register the installed JAVA with the Firefox/Mozilla browser.
