Composing and Editing Text : Add Bullets and Numbering

Numbered and bulleted lists are useful tools for presenting different types of information. Use bulleted lists for information that is related, but does not need to be presented in a particular order; use numbered lists for items that should be presented in a specific order.

To create a bulleted or numbered list:

  1. Select the block of text that you want to change into a list.Format dropdown menu, Bullets and Numbering option

  2. Go to the Format menu.

  3. Select Bullets and Numbering.

  4. Select the appropriate option from the Bullets and Numbering dialog box.

5. Click on OK.

Word Extras

  • You can also use the icons on the Formatting Toolbar to set bullets or numbering.

  • You can set the bulleting/numbering options before you start to type in menu (or the appropriate button on the toolbar.)
  • Bullets or numbers are automatically inserted immediately following all carriage returns.
  • To turn bullets or numbers off, select a block of text, then use the Format/Bullets and Numbering option on the menu (or the appropriate button on the toolbar).
