Step 1. Before using
the scanner, there needs to be a minimum amount of setup
. It should be "interfaced" with the computer properly,
by installing a card and/or cable. Software to communicate with
the scanner needs to be installed on the computer. Instructions
will vary depending on the scanner. Once this is done, the scanner
needs to be powered on before the computer. |
 |
Step 2. Next, select
the source document. Remember, the better the source, the
better the final results. Images can be "cleaned up" in an image
editing program such as Photoshop.
Dust and scratches can even be removed from photographs after the
digitizing process. Keep in mind that some photographs may have
copyrights. Educational purposes give certain freedoms, but this
does not give you license to steal or call other's work your own.
Permissions may need to be acquired. |
 |
Step 3. The next step
is to place the image on the glass face down.
There are usually marks on the scanner that will guide you as to
where to place the image. Then close the top of the scanner. |
 |
Step 4. How you begin
the scanning process will depend on what software came with your
scanner. Most image editing programs have a built-in way of communicating
with the scanner called "TWAIN". Read the instructions that came
with your image editor about acquiring images through a TWAIN device.
In the illustration we are using Microsoft Photo Editor, which comes
with the Microsoft Office suite. If your scanner was installed properly,
clicking on the scan icon should initialize the
scanning software. |
 |
Step 5. Again, depending
on your scanner, a window separate from your photo editor should
appear. This is the scanning software that allows you to preview
a scan, set the number of colors and resolution,
and select the area for the final scan. When you are ready for the
final scan , you usually select the File menu and
choose Place Image . This will perform the final scan and transfer
the image to your image editing program, ready for you to further
manipulate. (The photo to the left shows the Photoshop manual being
scanned) |
