UMW Online and Network Resources
Net ID & Password
As a new member of the UMW community, you will need to access University network resources and systems during your time here. Your NetID and Password will be the means by which you will have access to network resources.
Each person at UMW is assigned a username known as a "NetID." Your NetID is 8 characters long, and will be used to login to our systems at the University throughout your studies here. It will also become your e-mail address.
All network and online resources require a password. Upon arrival at UMW, you will be given a temporary password. The temporary password will be six digits long, and will be comprised of the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number* + 2 digit designation of your birth month (e.g., April =04) [Note: If you have no Social Security number, a password will be assigned for you.] Since your password is based on personal information, you will need to change it. You will need to use this initial password, and then change your password. Our major systems (Network, Faculty/Staff E-mail, Banner, OneU) are independent. You are urged to change your password (and enter your responses to the challenge questions, when asked) as soon as possible.
Network Resources/Password Management
The Department of Information Technologies (DoIT) has implemented a password self-service system that allows you to change your network password online from anywhere that you have access to a web browser. Using this system changes the password for logging in to the Banner, network, proxy access, the student email system, and the portal; It does not change the password for Blackboard or Groupwise. The system also features a forgotten password service that allows you to reset your own password if it has expired or if you have forgotten it. To use this self-service password reset feature, you MUST answer a series of challenge questions BEFORE your password expires or is forgotten. You are urged to change your password and enter your responses to the challenge questions as soon as possible.

Blackboard
Blackboard is the University's online course management system. It is where faculty members post information related to the classes. Blackboard is populated with all courses, all faculty, and all students. By default, a Blackboard course is UNAVAILABLE when it is created. This is done to allow instructors the opportunity to add content and make changes to the course without the enrolled students accessing and viewing to the course before it is ready. To allow students to
access a course, the course instructor must make the course AVAILABLE.
You will need to change your temporary password separately in Blackboard. To do so, enter Blackboard, and choose Personal Information. We suggest that you use the same password that you used for Banner – it will be easier to remember one password than several.

UMW has separate e-mail systems for students and faculty/staff members. The UMW email system is considered the vehicle for official communication. This tool will be the only tool used by the Registrar’s office, Financial Aid, and other campus offices. Email will not be sent to other email systems, so you are responsible for checking your UMW account regularly. You may choose to forward mail to another account.

Anything that you put in a folder called "public.www will be recognized by the Web server as the root folder of your personal Web site.
