UMW Policy on Hiring Photographers
The Office of University Publications maintains policies for the University regarding the procedure for hiring photographers and the procedure for acquiring consent from individuals who appear in photos that are for University use.
Hiring Photographers
Any office that decides to hire a photographer must contact the Office of University Publications (540/654-1275) to see if that individual or company is on the list of approved photographers for the University.
If the photographer is not on the list, the individual or representative must sign a release form that assigns copyright of the photos to the University.
The form protects the University and allows departments to share photographs without concern about copyright provisions.
This is an important legal step that ensures that the photos can be used not only by the department, but also in University publications and for promotional use.
The form must be signed by the Assistant Vice President of University Publications, and a copy must remain on file in that office.
