GARI MELCHERS HOME AND STUDIO TO OFFER PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP, MARCH 25
Fredericksburg, Va. – Gari Melchers Home and Studio will host a pinhole photography workshop taught by Steve Griffin, professor of art at the University of Mary Washington, on Sunday, March 25, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn more about this low-tech version of photography. Pinhole photography is essentially lenseless photography where a tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole and an image is formed in the camera. The instructor will provide a variety of pinhole cameras for the students to use.
After viewing examples of pinhole photography and a demonstration of the process step-by-step, workshop participants will have the opportunity to take their own photos. A temporary darkroom will be available so the class can experience the magic of traditional silver-based photography.
Griffin has taught photography for 25 years. He holds an MFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Wisconsin, and his work in painting, mixed media, photography and printmaking has been included in more than 100 local, regional and national exhibitions.
The workshop fee, which includes all supplies, is $25 per person for members of Friends of Belmont and $30 per person for non-members. Pre-registration is required.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 27-acre estate and former residence of the artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is part of the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Va., a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge. The museum Web site is www.GariMelchers.org
