HISTORICAL AUTHOR AND SCHOLAR TO LECTURE AT UMW, SEPT. 20
Fredericksburg, Va. – Author Jeremy Black will present the lecture “Why Wars Happen,” based upon his book of the same title, on September 20 at 5 p.m. in Monroe Hall, Room 104 on the University of Mary Washington campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Why Wars Happen focuses on the idea that the origins and practices of war are heavily influenced by cultural factors. Using examples from specific wars, Dr. Black criticizes the current theories that overemphasize the sense of order in the international system.
Author of 46 books, Dr. Black studied at Queens’ College Cambridge, St. John’s College Oxford, and Merton College Oxford, and earned his doctorate at the University of Durham. He is currently a professor of history at the University of Exeter, editor of the journal Archives, and a member of the Royal Historical Society and the British Records Association. His research focuses on early modern British and continental European history, with particular interest in international relations, military history, the press and historical atlases.
The lecture is sponsored by the departments of Political Science and International Affairs, and History and American Studies. For additional information, call Jason Davidson, assistant professor of political science, at (540) 654-1509.
