PROFESSOR OF COMMUNICATION TO SPEAK AT UMW, APRIL 14
Fredericksburg, Va. – Kathleen Blake Yancey, professor of professional communication at Clemson University, will present a lecture, “Reflection in the Writing Classroom,” at the University of Mary Washington on Thursday, April 14 from 4 to 5 p.m. in Trinkle Hall, Room 204. In addition, she will host workshops on applying reflection to the writing classroom on Friday, April 15 at 11 a.m. in Trinkle Hall, Room 204 and at 1 p.m. in Chandler Hall, Room 203. The lecture and workshops are open to the public without charge.
During the lecture, Yancey will explore reflection as a form of both practice and inquiry in the classroom, including the ideas of reflection-in-action, constructive reflection and reflection-in-presentation. Arguing that reflection can enhance student learning and that teachers can more consciously improve the effectiveness of their teaching through habituating a professional reflective stance themselves, she will offer a structure for discussing how reflection operates as students engage in the writing process, through individual pieces of writing or a compiled body of their work, such as a portfolio.
Yancey is the 2005 Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. She also is the co-founder and co-editor of the journal Assessing Writing and has co-edited or co-authored seven books and more than 40 articles and chapters on the teaching of writing. Her interests include the use of digital portfolios, college and K-12 composition, Writing Across the Curriculum, general education and assessment.
