PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH BUSINESS COMMUNICATION NAMED DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE-IN-RESIDENCE AT UMW
Fredericksburg, Va. – Christine Uber Grosse, professor of English business communication at Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management in Glendale, Ariz., has been selected to serve as Distinguished Graduate-in-Residence for the spring 2005 semester at the University of Mary Washington.
Dr. Grosse will be in residence from Monday, April 11 to Tuesday, April 12. She will meet with students and faculty on both campuses during her two-day visit. There will be no public lecture.
In addition, Grosse will complete an induction to Phi Beta Kappa began 32 years ago at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Alumni Executive Center. For reasons that are unclear, Grosse did not affix her signature to the membership roll when she was invited to join the honor society as a student in 1973. By signing the book now, she will become an official member of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society.
The Distinguished Graduate-in-Residence program was established by the Alumni Association to focus on outstanding alumni. The program brings these accomplished former students to campus to interact with current students and faculty.
A member of the class of 1973, Dr. Grosse graduated with a degree in geography. She received a master’s degree in Portuguese and Arabic and a doctorate in Romance Languages from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Grosse is an expert on languages and cross-cultural communication. Her research includes the role of trust in building business relationships in Asia and Latin America, and language use of international executives. She has published articles in numerous journals, including The Modern Language Journal, Business Communication Quarterly and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Matters. In addition, she is the past president of Florida TESOL and past chair of Video Interest Session, TESOL. She also is the Cross-Cultural Communications Area Leader for Thunderbird Centers for International Business Education and Research.
