UMW JAZZ ENSEMBLE AND OCTET TO PERFORM IN FEBRUARY
Fredericksburg, Va. – The University of Mary Washington Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Octet, both directed by Doug Gately, lecturer in music and director of jazz studies, will perform concerts in February. Both concerts are open to the public without charge.
The UMW Jazz Ensemble concert will take place on Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium. The ensemble and the UMW Jazz Octet will present a variety of jazz spanning the 20th century. The band will feature vocalists sophomore Anna Edelman of Ashland, Va., and sophomore Lindsey Cosgrove of Arnold, Md. In addition, senior Brent Mercer of Fredericksburg will play tribute to pianist Art Tatum and the Thomas Johnson trio with a Duke Ellington medley.
The Jazz Octet also will perform on Friday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Woodard Campus Center, Great Hall. In conjunction with the university’s Black History Month celebration, the concert will pay tribute to African-American artists who were major contributors to jazz.
