UMW-COMMUNITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO OPEN SEASON WITH “MASTERWORKS” CONCERT
Fredericksburg, Va. – The University of Mary Washington-Community Symphony Orchestra will open its 2004-05 season with a “Masterworks” concert on Friday, October 22, at 7:30 p.m. in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium.
Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. for members of the Friends of the Orchestra and at 7 p.m. for the general audience. The concert is open to the public without charge.
The program will open with Khachaturian's Gayne Ballet, which includes the Sabre Dance, and will be followed by Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat Major. Faculty pianist and Juilliard graduate Lynne Mackey will be the guest soloist. The orchestra will conclude the program with Carl Orff's monumental work, Carmina Burana, which is written for a large orchestra, combined choirs, two pianos and a children's chorus. To accommodate this arrangement, a stage extension has been built, and the orchestra will join forces with the Fredericksburg Singers, the Stafford Regional Choral Society and the Yamaha Music School of Fredericksburg Children's Chorus.
The orchestra is conducted by Kevin Bartram, assistant professor of music at the University of Mary Washington. For more information about the concert, call (540) 654-1012.
