WORKS OF HUSBAND AND WIFE ARTIST TEAM TO BE ON DISPLAY AT UMW, MARCH 15 – JUNE 3
Fredericksburg, Va. – The University of Mary Washington will host the exhibit Scherer & Ouporov in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery from March 15 through June 3. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery. Both the reception and the exhibit are open to the public without charge.
The exhibit will feature pieces by Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, a husband and wife artist team who met in Moscow when they were both studying at the Surikov Academy of Art in 1989. Their work has been collected by many private collectors and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress and the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum.
A major symbol in their work, as can be seen in the exhibition, has been the Tree of Life, a religious and cultural symbol representing the constant cycle of death, transformation and renewal. Using numerous mediums, Scherer and Ouporov’s work also includes Russian icon painting, figurative realism and medieval manuscript illumination.
Scherer, who is American-born, received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Florida State University and her master of fine arts degree from Brooklyn College. Ouporov, who is Russian-born, received his bachelor of fine arts degree from the Moscow Art School and his master of fine arts degree from the Surikov Academy of Art.
The Ridderhof Martin Gallery is part of the University of Mary Washington and is located on the campus at the intersection of College Avenue and Seacobeck Street. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. Free parking is designated for gallery visitors in a lot at the corner of College Avenue and Thornton Street.
