The Virginia Department of Health assumes responsibility for reporting of COVID-19 cases, including contact tracing. However, in an effort to keep the campus community informed, the University of Mary Washington has created a COVID-19 dashboard. Identifying information has been purposefully omitted from the dashboard, which is limited to empirical data in an effort to protect individual privacy.
The dashboard contains information that contributes to the assessment of the University’s status but cannot be considered a complete representation of the actual number of cases or degree of illness on campus, and is not intended to serve as a decision-making tool.
During regular school sessions, the COVID-19 Dashboard is updated daily, Monday through Friday; during university breaks, when most members of the University community are remote, the Dashboard is updated as needed.
The information below contains cumulative counts beginning January 1, 2021. View the historical data for cumulative counts from prior semesters and entry/exit testing.

Self-Reports
UMW community members are encouraged – but not required – to self-report, using the Self-Report a Case form. Those who self-report may be based in a remote location and have not necessarily been on campus. Self-reported cases are not verified.1Student Health Center Tests
Any UMW student suspected of being a close contact or having COVID-19 is eligible for testing at UMW’s Student Health Center (SHC). The SHC supplies the total number of tests it has conducted each day, including point-of-care antigen tests and follow-up PCR tests, as well as the number of those tests yielding positive results.Cumulative Cases
The number of cases above reflects a combination of all confirmed cases reported to the University since January 1, 2021, including those that have been self-reported, reported by the Student Health Center, and those obtained through prevalence testing. This column also includes a seven-day moving average of new cases per day.1Active Cases
This represents the number of individuals who are currently in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19. Once the period of isolation ends, cases are no longer considered active. Because isolation end dates are variable, UMW’s counts may not be an exact representation of active cases. Active cases also become inactive in the rare case where a positive rapid antigen test is overturned by a negative confirmatory PCR test. 1Isolation and Quarantine
All UMW students, faculty, staff and contractors who test positive for COVID-19 or have been exposed to a confirmed case are expected to follow CDC guidelines for quarantine (exposure) or isolation (positive test). The figures in this column show the number of vacant spaces in these categories.Prevalence Tests
Prevalence testing is required of all students – whether residential or off-campus – as part of UMW's campus disease monitoring efforts. The figures in this column reflect the total number of COVID-19 prevalence tests conducted per week, including the enhanced testing of student athletes. Some students may be tested more than once per week. The number of positive results reflects the outcome of rapid antigen tests and may include some false positives, which are followed up with a confirmatory PCR test.Historical Data
