If you are interested in law school, make an appointment at the Career Center for Pre-Law Advising.
We can discuss paths to law school that include:
Selecting a Major
The Philosophy Department offers a pre-law concentration as an option with the philosophy major. While the pre-law major is an excellent choice for those interested in the law, it is still first and foremost a philosophy major. Students interested in law school may select any major offered at UMW. In fact, most law students don’t major in pre-law. The American Bar Association recommends that students chose a major that interests them.
3 + 3 with George Mason
Mary Washington has teamed with George Mason’s Antonin Scalia School of Law to create the 3+3 Program that allows students to graduate from both undergrad & law school in six years instead of seven. After three years at UMW, students in this program begin law school at Scalia Law School, instead of their senior year of UMW. The credits earned during the first year at Scalia Law School count as elective credits at UMW.
Regular Law School Admission
Students can meet with a pre-law advisor in the Center for Career and Professional Development to learn how to navigate the law school admission council websites, learn about the LSAT, and discuss the law school admission process.
Extra Opportunities
UMW Pre-Law Society
UMW’s Pre-Law Society is a club open to all UMW students who are interested in law. The Society helps educate UMW students about law and assists students with the application process for law school. It organizes LSAT study sessions, field trips, events, lectures, and workshops throughout the year.
Mock Trial
Mock Trial is the perfect opportunity to explore litigation without going to law school. Each year AMTA releases a case study to Mock Trial Teams. Then, throughout the year, Mock Trials builds both sides of the case to compete against other schools in the Spring. Students on the team can also earn 3 hours of academic credit.
