The year prior to the anticipated graduation date all graduate students must submit a degree application to the Office of the Registrar one year prior to the anticipated graduation date. While all other degree requirements may have been met, no student is allowed to graduate unless the application has been filed appropriately. Degree applications are available in the Office of the Registrar and in the Office of Advising Services. You can find more information at Graduation Information Registrar.
Visit the bookstore during Grad Fair to order your regalia. Representatives will be on hand to help with the following services:

- Personalized Graduation Announcement Ordering
- Class Ring Sizing and Ordering
- Diploma Frame Selection
- Commencement Photography
- NameCoach, pronouncing your name correctly at Graduation
Grad Fair Dates:
- Thursday, March 15th from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
- Friday, March 16th from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Saturday, March 17th from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
For those unable to attend the Grad Fair, regalia may be purchased online March 19th through April 20th. A $15.95 home shipping fee and sales tax will be added to each order.
In addition, the UMW Bookstore will have a limited supply of regalia available after March 18th.
A holding cost fee of $10 will be added to any regalia ensemble purchased in the UMW Bookstore beginning March 26th.
Getting your name right!
This year, the University of Mary Washington invite you to use NameCoach to make sure your name is pronounced correctly at commencement. Just click the link below based on the College from which you will graduate. Follow the directions on how to voice-record your name, it’s that easy! You may also fill out the phonetic spelling of your name while you’re on the website.
“Day of” Instructions
Please arrive no later than 6:45 p.m. Graduates will line up to the right of the bell tower (in front of Bushnell Hall), and process under the Bell Tower to the front door of GW. The venue for Graduate Commencement is Dodd Auditorium, located in George Washington Hall. Ushers will be available to show graduates where and how to line up.
Guests and graduates may park in any space on campus that is not designated as reserved, handicapped, or full. The parking deck on Alvey Drive is available for parking as well. Additional parking may be found along College Avenue. Please be careful not to park where it is noted as residential parking.
On the day of the ceremony graduates are expected to wear the appropriate regalia. What you wear under your regalia is a personal decision; just make sure you are comfortable and prepared for any plans that day after you remove your commencement gown.
Graduates will be required to sit in reserved seats. Guests are invited to find a seat on a first come, first serve basis. The auditorium will open to the public at 6:30 p.m.
The ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public. There are no tickets for the ceremony, but it is advised to arrive early for parking and seating.
A professional photographer will take pictures of each graduate as they receive their diploma. These pictures will be made available for purchase. Guests may take photographs during the ceremony from their seats.
A flower vendor will be on campus walk for guests to purchase flowers for their graduate. Please pre-order flowers from our vendor;
