{"id":699,"date":"2019-11-20T16:26:11","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T21:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/?page_id=699"},"modified":"2019-11-20T16:26:11","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T21:26:11","slug":"first-year","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid-test\/eligibility\/merit\/first-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Freshmen Merit Scholarship Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>The University of Mary Washington will change or rescind merit scholarships in the event housing or residency status changes after awarding<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The university will credit one-half of the scholarship each semester to the student\u2019s account (Fall\/Spring).\u00a0 The recipient qualifies to receive a scholarship for each of four academic years of continuous undergraduate study at the University of Mary Washington if all of the following conditions are satisfied:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recipients must be <strong>full-time<\/strong> at the University of Mary Washington and successfully complete at least 12 credit hours each semester. Students with approved reduced loads from the Office of Disabilities Resources will have their award automatically adjusted should they fall below full-time status<\/li>\n<li>Current scholars who have maintained eligibility may use a merit scholarship for <em>pre-approved study abroad programs<\/em>.\u00a0 The Office of Financial Aid must receive written permission from the Center for International Education prior to the semester abroad term.\u00a0 Participation will be limited to one period of study, not to exceed two semesters.\u00a0 The University of Mary Washington will use study abroad credit hours equivalent to full-time enrollment transferred back to the University for consideration of scholarship eligibility for the subsequent year.\u00a0 Study abroad participants must return to the University of Mary Washington as full-time residence hall students to complete their degree requirements. Students may review the process for using merit scholarships for study abroad programs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/eligibility\/study-abroad\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Students may not use merit scholarships if participating in an internship in which the student resides off campus.<\/li>\n<li>The recipient must maintain the following yearly grade point averages to retain a merit scholarship:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Earned Credit Hours\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yearly GPA Requirement<br \/>\n1-29\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 2.5<br \/>\n30-59\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a02.75<br \/>\n60+\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 3.0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Earned Credit Hours<\/strong>\u201d are credit hours earned only at UMW.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Should the recipient be placed on social or administrative probation, or be found guilty of an Honor Code violation, the scholarship will be withdrawn, and charges to the student shall be adjusted according to the University\u2019s refund policy.<\/li>\n<li>An adjustment to the amount of the scholarship will be made according to the University\u2019s refund policy should the recipient withdraw during the academic year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Mary Washington will change or rescind merit scholarships in the event housing or residency status changes after awarding.
