If you are planning to withdraw from all courses in a semester, please contact the Office of the Registrar, at (540)654-1259 or registrar@umw.edu for full withdrawal procedures.

If the total course withdrawal takes place before the semester has begun, or if the student has taken a full-semester leave of absence, the estimated financial aid for that semester will be cancelled, therefore not applied to the student’s University account.

Withdrawing from the semester

Official withdrawals from academic courses occur through the UMW Office of the Registrar. Withdrawing from all courses in a semester will affect the amount of aid that students may be eligible for during that semester. As a result, it is possible that financial aid packages may be changed after the withdrawal date is known, which could result in a balance due on the student’s University account.

If you are planning to withdraw from all courses in a semester, please contact the Office of the Registrar, at (540) 654-1259 or registrar@umw.edu for full withdrawal procedures.

Return of State Funds

State Grant funding will be returned in compliance with that state’s regulations. Virginia State grants are returned based on the percentage of days completed.

Return of UMW Merit Based Scholarships and Endowed Scholarship Funds

University grants and scholarships will be adjusted based on the percentage of tuition paid. For example, a student who withdraws and receives a 20 percent tuition credit will lose 20 percent of his/her institutional aid. See the “Refund Policy” for the amount of tuition credit a withdrawn student is eligible to receive.

Private Educational Student Loans

The policies regarding withdrawal mid-semester are determined by each private loan lender. UMW will contact the lender when the official withdrawal date is known for determination of how to proceed with the loan funds.

Federal Direct Student Loans

Direct Loan Exit Counseling

Federal Loan Exit Counseling is required by the Federal regulation for all students that withdraw, graduate, or drop below half-time enrollment.
