{"id":19,"date":"2016-02-10T13:44:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-10T18:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/?page_id=19"},"modified":"2025-10-29T09:45:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T13:45:30","slug":"completing-the-fafsa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/process\/completing-the-fafsa\/","title":{"rendered":"Completing the FAFSA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-completing-the-fafsa\">Completing the FAFSA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fafsa-priority-filing-deadlines\">FAFSA priority filing deadlines:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Incoming 2026-2027 Freshman Students &#8211; March 1, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incoming 2026-2027 Transfer Students &#8211; April 1, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All current continuing students &#8211; March 1, 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">All undergraduate students that do NOT file the FAFSA by the priority filing date of March 1 will continue to be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/types\/loans\/#h-federal-direct-loans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Direct Student Loans<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/types\/federal-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Grants<\/a>. Other funds (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/types\/virginia-state-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia State Grants<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/financialaid\/types\/scholarship-opportunities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scholarships<\/a>, etc.) will not be available after that date.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-baef362d wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-default wp-container-content-69bc4bdf\" id=\"h-create-your-fsa-id\">Create your FSA ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8d2db683 wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply for an <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/fsa-id\/sign-in\/landing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FSA ID<\/a>, a username and password combination that allows you to sign your FAFSA electronically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can get your FSA ID as you fill out the FAFSA, but you also have the option to get it ahead of time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How To Create a StudentAid.gov Account\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iTb7hMVtzco?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left is-style-default wp-container-content-69bc4bdf\" id=\"h-completing-the-fafsa-0\">Completing the FAFSA<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How To Fill Out the FAFSA\u00ae Form\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9apxxQrx-WY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-information-needed-for-the-fafsa\">Information Needed for the FAFSA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student, parent and\/or spouse Social Security Numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student driver&#8217;s license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Alien Registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married), and for your parents if you are a dependent student:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign tax return and\/or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or Palau<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student, parent and\/or spouse untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans non-education benefits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-determining-dependency-status\">Determining Dependency Status<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The FAFSA asks a series of questions that determine whether you are a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/filling-out\/dependency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dependent or independent student<\/a> for purposes of applying for federal student aid. If you are a dependent student, you must report parent information, as well as your own information, on your FAFSA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reporting-financial-information\">Reporting Financial Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use two-year prior tax data. For instance, if you are filling out the 2025-26 FAFSA, use 2023 tax information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If eligible, use your Federal Tax Information pulled directly from the IRS.   &#8211; <span style=\"color: #c70000\"><strong>&nbsp;The information transferred from the IRS will not be displayed<\/strong><\/span>.<span style=\"color: #c70000\"><strong>&nbsp;This change was made to protect sensitive tax information.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If unable to use Federal Tax Information from the IRS you will need to enter it in manually.<span style=\"color: #c70000\"><strong><br><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fafsa-the-next-steps\">FAFSA: The Next Steps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS) will be sent to the email address provided by the student on the FAFSA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review your summary to make sure you didn\u2019t make a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mistake on your FAFSA<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FAFSA will provide information to the financial aid office to determine your financial aid eligibility for Federal, State and Institutional aid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your two years prior tax information has changed significantly please contact the UMW Office of Financial Aid to determine if a change to your financial aid eligibility is needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The information on this page is found on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Student Aid website<\/a>, which is an excellent resource for all students using federal aid (Direct Loans, Plus Loans, Federal Pell Grant, etc), especially while filling out the FAFSA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Completing the FAFSA FAFSA priority filing deadlines: All undergraduate students that do NOT file the FAFSA by the priority filing date of March 1 will continue to be eligible for Federal Direct Student Loans, and Federal Grants.
