Such exploits tend to overshadow other aspects of their presidencies such as, notably, their contributions in the area of conservation and environmentalism. Indeed, Professor Douglas Brinkley will contend in his lecture that \u201cno two Americans did more for the National Parks than these two.\u201d This program is especially timely, as 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"lectureSpeaker\" style=\"padding-top: 1em;\">Speaker: Douglas Brinkley<\/h2>\n<div class=\"speakerInfo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/10\/Brinkley-photo-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail alignleft\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" style=\"\" srcset=\"\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/10\/Brinkley-photo-150x150.jpg 150w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/10\/Brinkley-photo-50x50.jpg 50w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/10\/Brinkley-photo-75x75.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>\n<p>Douglas Brinkley is a Professor of History at Rice University, bestselling author, and presidential historian whom CNN has described as \u201ca man who knows more about the presidency than just about any human being alive.\u201d He serves as a contributing editor for Vanity Fair and is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic Monthly.  No fewer than eight of Brinkley\u2019s books have been selected as New York Times Notable Books of the Year, and each of his most recent publications have been New York Times bestsellers.   He has just completed the third volume of his U.S. conservation history series, titled Rightful Heritage: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Land of America. The first two volumes\u2014The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America and The Quiet World: Saving Alaska\u2019s Wilderness Kingdom, 1879 to 1960\u2014were published in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Both were major bestsellers.  Brinkley has also been actively involved in the conservation community.  <\/p>\n<p>Brinkley earned his bachelor\u2019s degree at Ohio State University and received his doctorate in U.S. Diplomatic History from Georgetown University in 1989.
