He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave-owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Initially mentored by William Lloyd Garrison, Douglass spoke widely, using his own story to condemn slavery. By the Civil War, Douglass had become the most famed and widely travelled orator in the nation. In his unique and eloquent voice, written and spoken, Douglass was a fierce critic of the United States as well as a radical patriot. After the war he sometimes argued politically with younger African Americans, but he never forsook either the Republican Party or the cause of black civil and political rights.<\/p>\n<p>In this \u201ccinematic and deeply engaging\u201d (<cite>The New York Times Book Review<\/cite>) biography, David Blight has drawn on new information held in a private collection that few other historian have consulted, as well as recently discovered issues of Douglass\u2019s newspapers. \u201cAbsorbing and even moving\u2026a brilliant book that speaks to our own time as well as Douglass\u2019s\u201d (<cite>The Wall Street Journal<\/cite>), Blight\u2019s biography tells the fascinating story of Douglass\u2019s two marriages and his complex extended family. \u201cDavid Blight has written the definitive biography of Frederick Douglass\u2026a powerful portrait of one of the most important American voices of the nineteenth century\u201d (<cite>The Boston Globe<\/cite>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"lectureSpeaker\" style=\"padding-top: 1em;\">Speaker: David W. Blight, one of America\u2019s most distinguished historians, is Sterling Professor of American History at Yale University, joining that faculty in January, 2003.  He previously taught at Amherst College for thirteen years.  As of June, 2004, he is Director, succeeding David Brion Davis, of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale.  In 2013-14 he was the William Pitt Professor of American History at Cambridge University, UK.  <\/p>\n<p>Blight works in many capacities in the world of public history, including on boards of museums and historical societies, and as a member of a small team of advisors to the 9\/11 Memorial and Museum team of curators.  For that institution he wrote the recently published essay, \u201cWill It Rise: September 11 in American Memory.\u201d  In 2012, Blight was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and delivered an induction address, \u201cThe Pleasure and Pain of History.\u201d<br \/>\nBlight was the recipient of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in History for his monumental study, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom. He is also the author of <cite>Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory<\/cite> (Harvard University Press, 2001), which received eight book awards, including the Bancroft Prize, the Abraham Lincoln Prize, and the Frederick Douglass Prize as well as four awards from the Organization of American Historians, including the Merle Curti prizes for both intellectual and social history.<br \/>\nHe is also a frequent book reviewer for the <cite>New York Times<\/cite>, <cite>Washington Post Book World<\/cite>, the <cite>Chicago Tribune<\/cite>, the <cite>Los Angeles Times<\/cite>, the San Francisco Chronicle, the <cite>Boston Globe<\/cite>, <cite>Slate.com<\/cite> and other newspapers, and has written many articles on abolitionism, American historical memory, and African American intellectual and cultural history.   He is one of the authors of the bestselling American history textbook for the college level, <cite>A People and a Nation<\/cite> (Houghton Mifflin).  <\/p>\n<p>Blight has been a consultant to many documentary films, including, \u201cDeath and the Civil War,\u201d (2012), the 1998 PBS series, \u201cAfricans in America,\u201d and \u201cThe Reconstruction Era\u201d (2004) among others.  Blight has a Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and did his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University.  He has also taught at Harvard University, at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, and for seven years was a public high school teacher in his hometown, Flint, Michigan.
