He also was reviled by generations of white Southerners as an apostate\u2014both for criticizing the generalship of Robert E. Lee and becoming a Republican and supporting Black voting and interracial governance during Reconstruction. Centering Longstreet&#8217;s rejection of Lost Cause tropes, his friendship with Ulysses S. Grant, and the theme of race relations in postwar Louisiana, Elizabeth Varon\u2019s <em>Longstreet: The Confederate General Who Defied the South<\/em> explores&nbsp;Longstreet\u2019s influential political career and connects it to the perennial debates over his wartime record at Gettysburg and elsewhere.&nbsp; Longstreet&#8217;s life dramatizes, Varon shows, divisions within the South and the elusiveness of reconciliation over the meaning, legacies, and memory of the Civil War era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Longstreet <\/em>was reviewed in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, <em>Atlantic <\/em>and <em>Guardian<\/em>.&nbsp;The book won the inaugural American Battlefield Trust Prize and the Georgia Historical Society&#8217;s book award, and was a finalist for the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>&nbsp;biography prize, among other honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/12uR8QWglNSScGBSFZbgf6IRLkzHScwrv\/edit?usp=sharing&amp;ouid=103238403274382254745&amp;rtpof=true&amp;sd=true\">VIEW PHOTO SLIDESHOW<div class='arrow'><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speaker-elizabeth-varon\">Speaker: Elizabeth Varon<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2024\/11\/varon_pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2024\/11\/varon_pic.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62178\" style=\"width:278px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth R. Varon is Langbourne M. Williams Professor of American History at the University of Virginia and a member of the executive council of UVA&#8217;s John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History. Varon grew up in northern Virginia and attended Swarthmore College for her B.A. and Yale University for her Ph.D.&nbsp; She has taught at Wellesley College and Oxford University.&nbsp; She is the author of six books, including <em>Armies of Deliverance:&nbsp; A New History of the Civil War<\/em>, which won the 2020 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
