{"id":3141,"date":"2013-01-01T14:47:09","date_gmt":"2013-01-01T19:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/gl\/?p=3141"},"modified":"2021-02-17T01:10:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T06:10:17","slug":"rasputin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/2013\/01\/01\/rasputin\/","title":{"rendered":"Rasputin"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p>Lecture Date: April 16, 2013<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rasputin\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/64753055?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1100\" height=\"620\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/umwwebmaster.wpengine.com\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2012\/11\/Rasputin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-47551 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/umwwebmaster.wpengine.com\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2012\/11\/Rasputin-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"Rasputin\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2012\/11\/Rasputin-198x300.jpg 198w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatlives\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2012\/11\/Rasputin.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\"><\/a> The very name Rasputin evokes mystery &ndash; &nbsp;a whiff of the occult. &nbsp;Rasputin is famous for compelling eyes, mystical powers and a great sexual appetite. &nbsp;His death has become legendary. &nbsp;No other Russian has penetrated so deeply into urban folklore and pop culture. &nbsp;Born a peasant in Siberia in 1869, Rasputin established himself as a Holy Man &ndash; a <i>starets<\/i> &ndash; a teacher, preacher and healer. &nbsp;In October 1905 he met Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, the Empress Alexandra. &nbsp;Their son Alexis, heir to the throne, was a hemophiliac who suffered excruciating attacks of internal bleeding. &nbsp;The doctors were helpless, but when Rasputin prayed, the attacks ended. &nbsp;This made Rasputin influential with the tsar and his wife, to the extent that, by 1914, he was thought to be all-powerful, and Russians were soon speaking of &ldquo;The Reign of Rasputin.&rdquo; &nbsp;Alarmed, a group of monarchists murdered Rasputin on December 17, 1916. &nbsp;Even so, when a popular uprising forced Nicholas II to abdicate in March 1917, Rasputin was dug up and cremated; his remains were dumped in a stream in a lonely forest on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.<\/p><h2 style=\"color: #b81237;font-family: MuseoSlab;font-weight: 900\">Speaker: Joseph T. Fuhrmann<\/h2><p>Joseph T.
