The director of UMW\u2019s Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies is well on his way at the University of Mary Washington, where more than 1,200 undergraduates from seven universities have joined an online digital storytelling course known as DS106. This community class is just one of his unconventional initiatives that earned Groom recognition among 12 \u201cinnovators who are transforming campuses\u201d by the Chronicle of Higher Education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pushing boundaries,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are making our students citizens in a digital age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In DS106, students create and complete each other\u2019s assignments and interact with students from across the world. The course has spawned more than 18,000 online posts and an <a href=\"blank\">assignment bank<\/a> with nearly 300 contributions, not to mention a radio and <a href=\"blank\">TV station<\/a>. The faculty at Mary Washington make it possible and we have students who are willing to experiment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The willingness to experiment and evolve is at the heart of \u2018edupunk,\u2019 an expression Groom coined. \u2018Edupunk,\u2019 as Groom sees it, is the idea that everyone within a university should come together as a community to create and shape its digital identity.
