Photo by Leigh Williams &#8217;14.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With gardening shears in hand, she will begin the process of removing invasive ivy throughout campus by clipping the ivy into sections, rolling it up to remove it, carefully digging up the roots and finally, pulling it off the trees to be composted. Photo by Leigh Williams &#8217;14.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In their first-year seminar, \u201cWriting Ecology: Literature and Environment in the U.S. and Latin America,\u201d Associate Professor of Spanish Jeremy Larochelle led the class through a semester of literature and environmental studies, also known as ecocriticism. Larochelle also serves as the faculty adviser of the Greenhouse community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel strongly that the LLC experience made for a more engaged class,\u201d said Larochelle. \u201cThe fact that they all knew each other from before the class met for the first time established a special classroom dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To sophomore program assistant Kathryn Erwin, the Greenhouse functions as \u201ca little family,\u201d both inside and outside the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Erwin, with the help of the Office of Residence Life, created Greenhouse during her freshman year after a gap year living in Norway, where she spent time as an exchange student finding a passion for sustainable living though the green lifestyle of Norwegians. Photo by Leigh Williams &#8217;14.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEvery day they get to come back home with 16 people they already know and consider friends\u2026I really think it makes that transition easier and makes their lives more enriched and supported really early on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Magliato said living with other eco-interested peers helps her and others realize they are not alone in their goals and interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like we inspire each other to be better and more sustainable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The goal, Erwin said, is to foster each student\u2019s passion individually. \u201cThis is not a one-path thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Provost Jonathan Levin knows firsthand the impact living-learning communities can make. Photo by Leigh Williams &#8217;14.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to the students\u2019 capstone projects, their volunteer efforts on and off campus are plentiful.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall, the Greenhouse participated in Friends of the Rappahannock\u2019s Riverfest, where they volunteered by passing out crabs to hungry guests.<\/p>\n<p>The group also traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa., for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearepowershift.org\/\">Power Shift 2013<\/a> in October, and recently visited the Stafford County Landfill, where recycling from UMW is dropped off.<\/p>\n<p>At this 600-acre parcel of land with 400-foot tall mountains of trash, the students found a new aspect of education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt brings in an element of accountability that you don\u2019t usually get when you take environmental science in school,\u201d said Weathersby.<\/p>\n<p>Next year, the majority of the Greenhouse freshmen will move on to the newly established conceptual living community stationed in Mason Hall, where 20 sophomores will live in green living housing.<\/p>\n<p>Next year, the Greenhouse will continue on with new freshman and continue to grow with other living-learning communities on campus.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2014-2015 academic year there will be nine living-learning communities housing 187 students, according to the Office of Residence Life.<\/p>\n<p>The overall goal is to see 30 percent of incoming freshman in living-learning communities in the next five years, according to Margot Jebb, area coordinator for Marshall, Russell, Mason and Randolph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to do what\u2019s best for the students, so if this is catching on and students are really enjoying their experience then we\u2019re going to do what we need to do to keep doing that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Living-learning communities are a unique way for first-year students to become involved on campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":83,"featured_media":14151,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"umw_cb_additional_links":[[]],"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_advisory_expires_time":"","_advisory_meta_include":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[16],"class_list":{"0":"post-14141","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-show","8":"tag-biology","9":"entry"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
