The University of Mary Washington will soon croon to its own fight song. And students will get a chance to help pen the lyrics.<\/p>\n

The winner will receive $250 and a new iPad, and will have his or her name attached to the song in perpetuity.\"Group<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want the song to last and be a part of the UMW culture and tradition,\u201d said Vice President for Student Affairs Doug Searcy.<\/p>\n

The song, \u201cSoar, Eagles, Soar!\u201d is being composed by Paul Murtha, a world-class composer and arranger for the United States Army Band. Murtha has long been associated with UMW as a member of the UMW Faculty Brass Quintet and an arranger for the UMW Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n

Students interested in contributing lyrics should:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Listen<\/b> to the music (in electronic format at the bottom of the page). It eventually will be recorded by the UMW band.<\/li>\n
  2. Open<\/b> the lyric sheet for the song<\/a> and follow along.<\/li>\n
  3. Write the words.<\/b> You\u2019ll need to supply a word for each note written. The first and last lines have been written, so students will be asked to fill in the rest. Students should feel free to research other fight songs for reference, but make sure that the final version is original. Remember that these lyrics must be easy to sing, classy, and timeless.<\/li>\n
  4. The Chant.<\/b> Like most fight songs, ours will have a chant in the middle with lots of percussion elements. The words to the chant are supplied in the document as an example only, and can be changed.<\/li>\n
  5. Two verses.<\/b> The \u201cD.S. al fine\u201d at the end means that we go back to the first verse and play it until the end, right before letter E. The first and last lines must remain the same, but we are looking for different lyrics for each verse.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
