Shaken, Wolfe drove to the campus they\u2019d called home.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d been coasting, he realized, even back then \u2013 a business administration major on \u201cthe four-plus-year plan.\u201d But Mary Washington wasn\u2019t giving up on Wolfe yet. He thought of his friend and how he\u2019d loved movies, especially &#8220;The Big Chill&#8221;; they\u2019d seen it together. As Wolfe strolled Campus Walk, reliving his past, he came face-to-face with his future \u2013 a flier for film school on a bulletin board outside Lee Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I got over my fear of failure, things started happening,\u201d said Wolfe, now executive vice president for Worldwide Creative Operations at NBC Universal. \u201cI realized I was holding myself back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s supported the marketing of hundreds of films. On his r\u00e9sum\u00e9: Best Picture Academy Award winners \u201cSchindler\u2019s List,\u201d \u201cShakespeare in Love\u201d and \u201cA Beautiful Mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the early \u201980s, though, when the Virginia Beach native came to Mary Washington on an academic scholarship, he hadn\u2019t planned a Hollywood career. He\u2019d moved in with his parents and been dumped by his girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a step back and said, \u2018What do I really want to do?\u2019 \u201d said Wolfe, who\u2019d dabbled in media, including interning at a Fredericksburg radio station.<\/p>\n<p>The Lee Hall flier was the answer. He quit his job, moved to Boston and enrolled at Emerson College. With a master\u2019s degree in communication management, he headed to LA, where he soon snagged a job at Orion Pictures. There, Wolfe helped sell blockbusters like \u201cDances with Wolves\u201dand \u201cThe Silence of the Lambs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really got into it,\u201d he said. Within months, he\u2019d moved on to Universal, supporting advertising campaigns \u2013 from TV to the Internet \u2013 for fan favorites like &#8220;Despicable Me&#8221; and &#8220;The Fast and the Furious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Success in the industry, Wolfe said, means being able to identify target audiences, generate buzz, and use technology to stay ahead of the curve.<\/p>\n<p>Even on the opposite coast, Wolfe remains close to his alma mater. A College of Business Advisory Board member, 2004 Distinguished Alumnus and 2007 Distinguished Graduate-in-Residence, he delivered UMW\u2019s Commencement address in 2010. He thought less of his triumphs as he flew back to Fredericksburg to speak to the soon-to-be grads, more of his struggles, especially early on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you try something and you don\u2019t like it, get out,\u201d Wolfe said. \u201cTry something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shared that advice on a visit to campus this spring.
