And he\u2019s touring the country with his revived solo show, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VQT035ZIs50\">Crimes Against Nature<\/a>,\u201d a humorous, compelling and personal look at the pressures, absurdities and contradictions of masculinity.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1100\" height=\"825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VQT035ZIs50?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kilmartin has made a career of navigating difficult topics in a way that makes the taboo approachable and opens discussion. He tackles the issue of sexual assault and the psychology of masculinity by, not making a joke of these issues, but more so by presenting information in a satirical manner, similar to the technique Jon Stewart uses on his show.<\/p>\n<p>Satire offers a unique opportunity to\u00a0expose truths and educate people by \u201chitting them in a different part of the brain,\u201d Kilmartin said.<\/p>\n<p>Kilmartin, more recently, took his expertise to the military, teaching courses at the Air Force Academy and working with a team at the United States Naval Academy to institute a new sexual assault prevention curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need is everybody in command to learn about this issue and commit to doing something about it,\u201d said Kilmartin, who tried to achieve this during his time teaching at the Air Force Academy. \u201cThey have to then go down the chain and educate their own subordinates who then educate other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also been quoted in international media, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/08\/13\/opinion\/bruni-tackling-the-roots-of-rape.html?_r=0\">The New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/comment\/change-the-conversation-and-attitudes-to-women-will-follow-20130814-2rvkh.html\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/drive\/expert-advice-on-violence-in-the-military\/4893292\">ABC Australia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/watch\/shows\/consider-this\/Consider-This-blog\/2013\/8\/21\/consider-this-uspolicyonsyriamilitarysexualassaultcollegesports.html\">Al Jazeera.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite these national platforms, Kilmartin says his classroom audience remains one of the most important. He received the unique opportunity to blend these two arenas last year when he taught gender psychology courses at the Air Force Academy. As national attention toward sexual assault within the Air Force grew alongside increased reportages, Kilmartin was brought in to help institute some change. They think they\u2019re in the minority,\u201d Kilmartin said. \u201cAnd sexist guys think they\u2019re in the majority, when actually they\u2019re in the minority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though he does not stand in front of his classes dropping punch lines about gender psychology, Kilmartin does use his history as a performer to present the subject in a relatable way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was something I kind of really had to battle when I first got here,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople thought that because I do comedy I\u2019m not a serious person, and then I came to this insight&#8230;serious and funny are not opposites. You can be both at the same time.
