A sprawling American beech tree outside of Woodard Campus Center doubles as an artists\u2019 canvas for art students at the University of Mary Washington.<\/p>\n

This fall, Assistant Professor Jason Robinson\u2019s eight advanced video technique students created imaginative digital designs through one-minute films projected onto the tree. The technique, called projection-mapping, requires careful consideration of the shape, texture and color of the platform\u2019s surface when designing.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoving edited footage onto the tree made it transform from two to three dimensional,\u201d said Tyler Duenas, a senior and studio art major. \u201cThe way my video looked on the tree was what I hoped that it would be. All the colors came through and the shape of the tree activated the faces in my video.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProjection-mapping is a real-world skill,\u201d said Robinson, UMW\u2019s first digital art professor in the Department of Art and Art History. Commonly used in theater productions and stage shows, projection-mapping requires deep analysis of the unique display platform.<\/p>\n

The digital artwork is just one of the projects undertaken by Robinson\u2019s students for the university\u2019s video art class. The advanced video technique course introduces students to video art and explores different ways of displaying work beyond single channel methods, such as a screen.<\/p>\n

For Robinson, video art isn\u2019t just a hobby \u2013 it\u2019s another instrument to make art and a highly marketable job skill.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no different than a paintbrush,\u201d said Robinson, who has been making his own films since he was 10 years old. He received an undergraduate degree in film and video from Penn State University and a master\u2019s degree in kinetic imaging from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was also an adjunct professor. Before coming to UMW, Robinson was an adjunct instructor at the University of Virginia and the program director for Light House Studio, a non-profit youth filmmaking center.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can make art on a computer just like you can make art on a canvas,\u201d said Robinson. \u201cThis is the democratization of art in a way \u2013 there are a lot less barriers to making art. Animation and video editing used to need specialized equipment, now that equipment is on your laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Video art is becoming a more integral part of UMW with the addition of the Information Technology Convergence Center (ITCC)\u2019s new video wall and the upcoming video wall that will be part of the university\u2019s new campus center. With its own unique structure and design, the campus center\u2019s video wall will teach students to consider the ways in which they create their films for the unique space.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going away,\u201d said Robinson. \u201cDigital art is a part of our culture. These classes are the opportunity to learn how to use the equipment you may already have.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
