Paige McKinsey was in middle school when the March for Women\u2019s Rights played out on Capitol Hill. But there she was, rallying with her mother and tens of thousands of others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the first time I ever experienced the word \u2018feminism,\u2019 \u201d said McKinsey, a UMW senior majoring in women\u2019s and gender studies<\/a> and international relations<\/a>. \u201cIt was a really important experience, participating in the system at such a young age.\u201d<\/p>\n

She could make a difference, she realized, just by showing up. Not that McKinsey, now a full-fledged feminist, \u201cjust shows up\u201d for anything. If she isn\u2019t touting equal rights at Lee Hall, she\u2019s tweeting the dangers of adopting Greek life or rallying for the ERA in D.C. She\u2019ll take that passion with her to West Africa when she enters the Peace Corps this spring. But the strides she\u2019s made for Feminists United will remain at Mary Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s taken them out of the shadows to be a real, critical part of campus life,\u201d said Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Chair Allyson Poska. <\/a><\/p>\n

Paige Heather Reese McKinsey was born with choices \u2013 her pick of two middle names \u2013 and parents who supported them. As a preschooler in Pennsylvania\u2019s Pocono Mountains, she remembers helping label birth control at her mother\u2019s Planned Parenthood office. Her father embraced his family\u2019s feminist vibe.<\/p>\n

By high school, McKinsey played harp, skied cross-country and claimed a spot on the volleyball team. That\u2019s when she read Khaled Hosseini\u2019s A Thousand Splendid Suns. <\/em>The author\u2019s message, about the Taliban\u2019s rights-crushinglaws against Afghan women, shaped her senior project \u2013 a forum for girls\u2019 education and Room to Read fundraiser.<\/p>\n

It was 2010, the year UMW unveiled its women\u2019s and gender studies program. That, coupled with one of her first classes, Craig Vasey\u2019s Introduction to Feminism, created the perfect storm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember thinking, \u2018This is the major I belong in,\u2019 \u201d said McKinsey, whose short blond hair and bumper sticker-plastered minivan make a statement on campus.<\/p>\n

A PRISM and Women\u2019s History Month Planning Committee member, Vagina Monologues <\/em>co-director and rape crisis counselor, she\u2019s used to being quoted in The Blue & Gray Press.<\/em> She was surprised, though, this fall when Ms. Magazine <\/em>ran a photo of her with fellow Feminists United members at a September ERA rally.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a passionate group \u2026,\u201d McKinsey told The Blue & Gray Press<\/em> about the club\u2019s first visit to Capitol Hill. \u201c[That] will allow us to affect change.\u201d<\/p>\n

She spread that passion across UMW at October\u2019s Make Noise rally, where Feminists United and other student groups urged participants to speak out against sexual assault, discrimination and all injustice.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have them come out and stand in solidarity with us,\u201d said McKinsey, a former Feminist Majority Foundation intern, \u201cdemonstrates that this campus is aware that these issues aren\u2019t happening in a vacuum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her Peace Corps work in Togo, West Africa, with maternal and newborn care, STI prevention and more, will lead to grad school and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s going to take what she\u2019s learned and make a difference in the world,\u201d Poska said. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine any better tribute to her education.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
