It was a bittersweet moment.<\/p>

As the Fredericksburg campus at the University of Mary Washington sweltered under the August heat, senior Tyler Carey met Wesley Berry, a 19-year-old boy with cancer, for the first time.<\/p>

“It was great to feel like I was helping someone out,” said Carey. “But at the same time, you know that this kid has cancer and that’s never something you want to hear.”<\/p>

Carey was matched with Berry through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that pairs children and families battling brain tumors with college and high school sports teams. Wesley was 12 years old when he first found out he had cancer in 2007 and has since been in and out of the hospital, undergoing radiation treatment, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.<\/p>

Carey, originally from Richmond, learned about the foundation through his dad, who suggested he get involved. “It didn’t even cross my mind to say no,” said Carey. “I wanted to help change someone’s life.”<\/p>

That first day, Carey showed Wesley around UMW’s Anderson Center and Tennis Center, talking about sports – one of things for which they both share a passion. As the upcoming captain of UMW’s men’s tennis team, Carey intended to get his whole team to meet Wesley.<\/p>

But he didn’t stop there.<\/p>

“We have over 500 student athletes at UMW,” said Carey. “So why have just the 12 or so guys on my team involved with Wesley when we could have everyone join in?” And that’s exactly what happened.<\/p>

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, Wesley officially became a UMW Eagle during a “welcome back” ceremony for all of the university’s student athletes. After a speech from Ken Tyler, UMW’s athletic director, Carey introduced Wesley and presented him with a UMW baseball jersey – Wesley’s favorite sport.<\/p>

The next thing you know, teams were taking the initiative to support Wesley on their own. Teams sent Wesley UMW athletic gear, signed shirts, cards and photos of themselves holding signs with “#Win4Wesley.”<\/p>

“It’s been so cool to see the coaches and teams come together,” said Carey.<\/p>

The business major will go on to lead his team during the upcoming season before graduating in May, but his time with Wesley won’t be forgotten.<\/p>

“This experience makes you very thankful for your life,” said Carey. “It’s a very cliché statement, but it’s true. It puts a lot in perspective.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
