\u201cYou\u2019re my scarecrow,\u201d she told Loyd as she returned her embrace. \u201cRemember what Dorothy told the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz<\/em>? I\u2019m going to miss you the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loyd takes her role as the beloved scarecrow to heart with all her patients. That\u2019s why the 30-year veteran joined the University of Mary Washington\u2019s Bachelor of Science in Nursing-Completion Program<\/a> last fall. She knows that the all-important degree will bolster her arsenal of nursing skills and help her reach her career goal as a patient care navigator.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen patients come in for treatment, they\u2019re scared,\u201d said Loyd, who is part of a collaborative team of doctors, nurses and radiation therapists at the Stafford oncology center operated by Mary Washington Healthcare (MWH). \u201cThey need encouragement. They want advice and reassurance. As a nurse, you’re a coach and mentor. With the BSN program, I\u2019m learning how to best advocate for patients so some of the stress can be alleviated while they’re going through their treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loyd, 51, is among 33 nurses in the inaugural program that provides advanced education for registered nurses in the region.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s a wife and mother of two grown children. Her son, Justin, recently earned a degree in biology from UMW and now works for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Her daughter, Jessie, will graduate in 2016 from a West Virginia college.<\/p>\n

UMW\u2019s nursing curriculum goes hand-in-hand with Loyd\u2019s work with cancer patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has provided validation for the work I\u2019m already doing,\u201d said Loyd, who worked in trauma, intensive and emergency care before finding her niche in cancer care. \u201cWhat we\u2019re learning in class prompts me to look at what I’m doing with patients in the office and evaluate my practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also learning to advocate for herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe classes and what I\u2019m reading give me the confidence to go back to my manager and say ‘this is what’s going on in the nursing world, are you taking this into consideration?\u2019\u201d said Loyd. \u201cI know how to be a nurse, but because I’m learning the most advanced practices, I feel I\u2019m helping push quality higher.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just what Mary Washington Healthcare intended when it provided a $25,000 grant to UMW to establish the BSN-completion program.<\/p>\n

\u201cNurses must achieve higher levels of education to respond to the demands of an evolving healthcare system and continue to meet the changing needs of patients,\u201d said Marianna Bedway, chief nursing officer and senior vice president for MWH. UMW\u2019s nursing degree program provides nurses a unique opportunity to meet current standards of nursing, while enhancing the overall education experience within a liberal arts curriculum, Bedway said.<\/p>\n

The University is partnering with Mary Washington Healthcare and Germanna Community College to provide multiple pathways for area nurses to bolster their skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cContinuing one\u2019s education to the bachelor level encourages the registered nurse to see a more global picture of healthcare,\u201d said Pamela McCullough<\/a>, director of the program. \u201cThe nurse is looking at populations instead of individuals and is learning how to think using different models. It\u2019s exposure to different ways of thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loyd, who expects to graduate in 2016, said the BSN-RN program has been a great fit for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cNursing is a field of lifelong learning. It\u2019s liberating to finally take steps towards completing a BSN degree, which will open the door to additional opportunities in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
