Master of Education program<\/a> in the fall. “Helping and caring for others is something I strive to do every day. It’s something that comes naturally to me.”<\/p>Her nurturing nature, especially for underprivileged children, has led Turner to make some powerful contributions in the Fredericksburg community. Through internships with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and James Monroe High School, where she helped develop a program for homeless students, she’s opened doors for area youth.<\/p>
“Brooke has done an incredible job of taking her sociology education out of the classroom and into the community,” said Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology Eric Bonds. “She’s making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged students, and I’m inspired by her efforts.”<\/p>
She’s a dynamic leader at UMW, escorting prospective UMW Eagles on campus tours to show off her alma mater, shepherding fellow students in the Multicultural Center’s peer mentoring program to ensure their success, and organizing the Black History Month Gospelfest that drew hundreds of people to UMW.<\/p>
“Brooke makes you feel like you are a friend from the first moment,” said Director of Multicultural Affairs Marion Sanford. “She is well-respected by her peers and often sought for advice or just a listening ear on an issue.”<\/p>
On Sundays, Turner takes that inspiration to church, where she leads the youth choir she joined when she was just 7. She also plays piano. At Mary Washington, Turner has performed with Voices of Praise and Bell A Cappella, and at events like this year’s Gospelfest.<\/p>
It was on campus, too, where she got her own board, after years of begging others for rides. The customized cruiser, with slightly larger wheels than a regular skateboard, was a gift from a friend.<\/p>
But Turner’s not into kickflips, noseslides or other slick tricks. That’s not the point.<\/p>
“Riding my skateboard and singing are both ways I relax and clear my mind,” she said. “When I do them together it puts me in a peaceful state of mind.”<\/p>
A student representative for the University Relations’ and Admissions’ offices, she also leads campus tours. She can’t hop on her board to take prospective students and parents to hot spots like Ball Circle and the Convergence Center. But that’s OK.<\/p>
“As a tour guide, I get to show them why UMW is a great school and share my personal experiences of what makes UMW unique,” Turner said, “and why I love it here.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
