It’s 2 a.m. when Joshua Bailey slides behind the wheel of his car, the last one left in the star-lit mall lot. He checks his phone for missed texts.<\/p>

“Hey JB, we’re going out …”<\/p>

“Josh, you able to chill tonight?”<\/p>

By now, though, at the end of the UMW senior’s late shift at Splitsville, most of his classmates have called it a night.<\/p>

One of nine children, Bailey knew he’d have to work to pay his way through college, but Double Drive wasn’t his first stop. Like many of the 234 transfer students UMW admitted last semester, he got his start at community college. A star business student, he’ll earn a bachelor’s degree this summer. But with a 50-hour job, 20-minute commute, 12 credit hours, and one fiancée, it’s been a balancing act.<\/p>

“You have to be conscious of what you do with your time. How much TV do you watch? How many video games do you play?” Bailey said. “You have to take a bullet in that area.”<\/p>

Growing up, his large family ran on teamwork. He shared a room with his brothers and helped raise the youngest, now 9 and 11, “from the ground up.” Home-schooled through eighth grade, Bailey played football in high school and worked – in retail, as a lifeguard, washing cars – to save for college.<\/p>

But when his friends and fiancée Danielle left for four-year schools, he stayed put in Spotsylvania County.<\/p>

“Being home definitely saved me,” said Bailey, who enrolled in community college and endured his buddies’ tantalizing texts from big-campus parties. “It’s hard to be waking up hung over when you’ve got your little brothers looking at you.”<\/p>

Or when you’re on the early shift at Splitsville, the bowling alley and movie theater where he’s worked his way up, from food service to shift manager, supervising as many as 70 employees each night.<\/p>

He pours that same passion into school, earning an associate’s degree and transferring under Virginia’s Guaranteed Admissions Agreement to UMW, where he’s ramped up his studies.<\/p>

“I don’t know how he does it,” said Assistant Professor of Marketing Kashef Majid. “He manages his time really well.”<\/p>

Impressed with Bailey’s Applied Statistics project, The Tipping Point<\/em>, based on Splitsville patrons’ gratuities, Majid asked him to take it to a national conference in Miami last summer.<\/p>

“He’s one of the first people who really made Mary Washington click for me,” Bailey said of Majid. “He saw an opportunity for me to learn and have fun, and he really put me on fire for it.”<\/p>

Bailey’s enthusiasm spills onto UMW’s sports field, where he’s played intramural volleyball, football, and Quidditch. He crams cleats, clothes, and books in his black Ford Escape so, if free time crops up, he’s ready to study or play.<\/p>

He’ll marry Danielle in May, adding one more responsibility – husband – to the last leg of his Mary Washington journey.<\/p>

“This is the time to push yourself as hard as you can,” Bailey said. “I’m just one of many who are out of work at 3:30 and in class by 4.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
