(Photo by Norm Shafer).\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshman Anna Rinko with her YouTube Channel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTrailers take the best parts of a movie and put them into beautiful, cohesive storylines,\u201d said Rinko, who has made more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC-V4WV2oP3lmiPtvUkQoxkg\">50 trailers<\/a> to date. \u201cMovie trailers tap into evolutionary biology, purposely triggering different associations through the music or style of the cuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rinko focuses her work on older films, which she edits as a way to \u2018resell\u2019 the movies to modern audiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlder movie trailers tend to have a large amount of narration and choppy cuts,\u201d said Rinko. \u201cThey simply haven&#8217;t aged well and come across as cheesy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim Groom, executive director of teaching and learning technologies, took notice of Rinko\u2019s affinity for media editing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was hard to forget because she fell in love with video mashups,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/the-psychology-of-movie-trailers-and-the-long-game-of-ds106\/\">Groom<\/a>, who taught the digital storytelling course in 2012.<br \/>\nRinko went on to research the physical and emotional effects of movie trailers as her junior and senior high school projects, later asking Groom to be her faculty advisor. Her final deliverable: the video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JU4V_ZIWaV8\"><em>Absolute Peace<\/em><\/a>, which Groom called \u2018a trailer for humanity.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal was to make a product that would be emotionally compelling,\u201d said Rinko, who used BBC News footage and the soundtrack for the <em>Iron Man 3<\/em> trailer to make the video. \u201c<em>Absolute Peace<\/em> highlights current events and puts them in perspective through recurring themes and the lens of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last spring, Rinko presented her research to a room full of faculty as UMW\u2019s Digital Media Workshop kickoff speaker \u2013 quite an achievement for a high school student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListening to her present was one of the best moments I\u2019ve had in my 10-year career at Mary Washington,\u201d said Groom.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Rinko is accustomed to achievement.
