UMW alum Becca Arm \u201916 walked away from a recent episode of the long-running TV game show Jeopardy!<\/em> with $27,500 and a second-place finish.<\/p>\n

Now employed as a library assistant, Arm served as a special collections student assistant in the Simpson Library during her time at UMW.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a wonderful library assistant, very detail-oriented and a very good writer,\u201d said UMW Head of Special Collections Carolyn Parsons. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to see that she\u2019s gone into the library profession.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arm was a fierce contestant on Jeopardy!<\/em>, leading her competitors \u2013 a management consultant and the returning champion, an ESL teacher \u2013 for most of the game.<\/p>\n

She tore through categories like \u201c1817,\u201d \u201cdesign & architecture\u201d and \u201cchildren\u2019s books\u201d in the show\u2019s first round, finishing in the lead with $9,000. In the second round, she muscled through topics including \u201csimiles,\u201d \u201centertaining fruits & vegetables\u201d and \u201cBiblical pairs,\u201d maintaining the lead with $22,200. Arm also snagged one Daily Double in each of the game\u2019s first two segments.<\/p>\n

In Final Jeopardy, she questioned the answer \u2013 \u201cHis First novel, from 1920, incorporated some of his pieces from The Nassau<\/em>, a Princeton literary magazine\u201d \u2013 correctly (F. Scott Fitzgerald) but wagered only $5,300, which left her just short of winning the game.<\/p>\n

Arm, who lives in Herndon, Virginia, majored in art history and was a scholarship recipient at Mary Washington. She is interested in onomastics, the study of names, she told the show\u2019s host, Alex Trebek, who admitted to being unfamiliar with the topic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can be any kind of name, but I\u2019m interested in personal names, given names. I like to watch what\u2019s in the media, what\u2019s going on in the news, see what\u2019s going to become popular as a baby name,\u201d Arm told Trebek. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
