The sabbatical took her from catacombs in Sicily to medical history museums in Frederick, Md., and Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became interested in looking at loss from a distance and looking imaginatively into the lives of others,\u201d she said, explaining that \u201cThe Opposite House\u201d ranges from poems about rural life in America to poems of travel and medical history.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Guggenheim Fellowship, Emerson spent two weeks in Sicily to gather research for the book. She explored catacombs underneath a monastery and became fascinated by the mummy of a small child that was preserved less than 100 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m interested overall in why we take so many photos and why we would mummify someone after they died,\u201d she said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to let things go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Opposite House\u201d is a departure from her previous collection, \u201cSecure the Shadow,\u201d which centers on the deaths of her brother and father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Secure the Shadow] was a very personal book for me,\u201d Emerson said. \u201cIt took me four years to write it\u2026 that was my most difficult book to put together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, she wrote \u201cThe Opposite House\u201d quicker than any of her previous five books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning \u201cLate Wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabbaticals allow faculty members, who usually direct the majority of their energy to teaching, the chance to give undivided attention to their own work, as in the case of Emerson\u2019s fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/umwwebmaster.wpengine.com\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"2691\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/emerson_students\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"4288,2848\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;5.6&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D90&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1349172831&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;80&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;1250&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0166666666667&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Emerson_students\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-300x199.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-1024x680.jpg\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2691\" src=\"http:\/\/umwwebmaster.wpengine.com\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-300x199.jpg 300w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-768x510.jpg 768w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-1024x680.jpg 1024w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-680x453.jpg 680w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2012\/10\/Emerson_students-1140x757.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWhen you get that break from teaching, you have that rare luxury to focus in and not spend the creative energy on anything but your own project,\u201d Emerson, recently named a \u201cWoman of Distinction\u201d by the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia, said.<\/p>\n<p>Now that she is back in her familiar role at UMW, Emerson finds creative fulfillment in her daily interactions with students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it\u2019s going well and you are excited about what your students are doing and about your job as their mentor\u2026it\u2019s very satisfying on that creative level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Allison Seay, a former student of Emerson\u2019s who is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2012\/01\/25\/umw-arrington-poet-in-residence-wins-prize-for-poetry-collection\/\">an accomplished poet in her own right<\/a>, said Emerson\u2019s guidance has been indispensable to her career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my first mentor, but she continues to be the best one, too,\u201d said Seay, a 2002 graduate and an adjunct instructor of English at UMW. \u201cThough I have gone on and studied under other poets and found additional readers for my work, it is her voice I always hear in my head. Her voice is clearest and closest to me.
