Our goal is to make student life better. At the end of the day, it\u2019s a pretty nice thing to be able to tell the President and the Board [of Visitors], \u2018this is what the students want or don\u2019t want.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To make sure he knows the pulse of student life, Thompson holds office hours each week to hear student concerns and feedback. Every month, he has lunch with President Richard V. Hurley and invites other students to join them. As SGA president, Thompson also represents the student body at meetings of the UMW Board of Visitors, known as the BOV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is good to be part of an organization much larger than myself,\u201d he said. \u201cI have to represent 4,500 students. Over winter break, he and the James Madison University SGA president met with the Department of Education in Richmond to discuss issues facing Virginia college students.<\/p>\n<p>Cedric Rucker, dean of student life and faculty adviser to the SGA, noticed Thompson\u2019s drive and determination on move-in day his freshman year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the outset, he has dedicated himself to serving others,\u201d Rucker said. \u201cFrom his days in the [Student] Senate to his time on the executive cabinet [of the SGA], he has measured himself based on his capacity and ability to get students involved and have students voices heard on critical issues that influence their time at UMW.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This semester, the SGA will hold a town hall meeting to make sure students are informed about and involved in the tuition process.\u00a0 Thompson will bring any student concerns raised in the town hall meeting to the BOV.<\/p>\n<p>For Thompson, the ability to involve more students in campus decision-making and the chance to make a difference in the community make his fast pace and oftentimes busy schedule worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal has always been to help as many people as I can,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson, who plans to attend law school after graduation, hopes groups like the SGA will help students make the most of their Mary Washington experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so easy to get involved here,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe in the power of ordinary students to do extraordinary things.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SGA President encourages students to make their voices heard.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":113,"featured_media":4901,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"umw_cb_additional_links":[[]],"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_advisory_expires_time":"","_advisory_meta_include":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-4891","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-show","8":"entry"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
