Summer brings a lot of energy and excitement and makes me think of Glenn Frey\u2019s song, The Heat is On.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"longdesc-return-44790\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-44790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sun in background and person standing with arms open.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw?longdesc=44790&amp;referrer=44789\" srcset=\"\/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image-300x200.jpg 300w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image-1024x682.jpg 1024w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image-768x512.jpg 768w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image-680x453.jpg 680w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image-1140x760.jpg 1140w, \/\/www.umw.edu\/lcpw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/blog-image.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> Summer is no doubt the season for fun and sun, yet it is also the time for hot weather and stress. It is no secret that hot and humid days can lead to exhaustion and feeling overwhelmed. The same is true as we face many tasks at work and home that do not stop during the summer. My friends often ask me if I am looking forward to the summer and doing nothing. My reply is always, I wish! Summer can mean the start of far more commitments and added responsibilities. In fact, we are often more socially active during the summer months, which can put added pressure on our already busy lives. The additional pressures can lead to exhaustion, stress, burnout and much more if we are not careful.<\/p>\n<p>When the weather is hot, we are reminded to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stay hydrated<\/li>\n<li>take frequent breaks<\/li>\n<li>maintain a healthy diet<\/li>\n<li>exercise<\/li>\n<li>get plenty of rest<\/li>\n<li>engage in calming activities<\/li>\n<li>avoid too much time in the heat<\/li>\n<li>stay cool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As we go through the hustle and bustle of life, stress can be a real problem. At some point in time, we will all experience some sort of stress. The key is to not let it overwhelm us or get to the point where it negatively impacts our physical and mental well-being. I have found that following the same list of advice above for surviving the hot weather works well for managing the busyness of life and controlling our stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>So, be encouraged during the remaining time this summer and beyond to take good care of yourselves. Enjoy the additional sunlight, make time to hang out with those you love, recharge, read a book and make the most of opportunities to walk, swim, and participate in other outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<p>In sum, savor the moment of these beautiful sunny days and enjoy a stress-free summer!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Veronica Curry, Associate Vice President of Human Resources at Germanna Community College As we are now well into the summer months, we can certainly say, The Heat is On.
