Mary Washington faculty share expertise on ‘With Good Reason,’ a national radio program that inspires thought, discovery and action through public engagement and dialogue on topics that shape our world.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Imposter syndrome, photoshopping, the complexities of foreign alliances, political humor, the magic of Disney World and shared musical experiences \u2013 these are just a few of the topics on which University of Mary Washington professors have contributed their expertise over the radio airwaves this past year.<\/p>\n

UMW is proud to announce the continued success of its collaboration with Virginia Humanities\u2019 With Good Reason<\/em> radio program, which brings the research and insights of Virginia\u2019s top educators to audiences across the nation. Each week, over 100,000 listeners tune in to 128 radio stations throughout Virginia, Washington, D.C., and 38 states to hear thought-provoking discussions with leading academics. Thousands more listen to the episodes through iTunes podcasts.<\/p>\n

The partnership between UMW and Virginia Humanities helps showcase valuable work in Virginia\u2019s higher education system. Since last summer, a dozen Mary Washington faculty members were featured on With Good Reason,<\/em> either as new guests or in re-aired episodes that continue to draw audiences.<\/p>\n

Some of the instructive topics shared recently by UMW faculty include:<\/p>\n

Taking a Presidential Joke<\/strong><\/a>: Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the Center for Leadership and Media Studies,\u00a0explained how the world of political humor can give Americans a glimpse of the major players and issues. (Oct. 4, 2024)<\/p>\n

Sharing Tunes, Making Connections<\/strong><\/a>: Kevin Caffrey, senior associate registrar, drew on his research involving empathy to reveal how shared musical experiences can provide ways to connect with strangers. (Sept. 13, 2024)<\/p>\n

Telling Birth Stories<\/strong><\/a>: Elizabeth Johnson-Young, professor of communications and faculty fellow of the Center for Teaching, investigated physical and emotional birth trauma, aiming to discern causes and responses. (May 10, 2024)<\/p>\n

Christmas Island Coral Reefs<\/strong><\/a>: Pamela Grothe, professor of earth and environmental science, described coral reefs as a climate history archive, helping track environmental shifts over hundreds of years. (Apr. 19, 2024)<\/p>\n

Made in Disney\u2019s Image<\/strong><\/a>: Marc Williams, professor of theatre, examined Disney World\u2019s influence on, and reflection of, American identity. (Mar. 16, 2024)<\/p>\n

Selfish<\/strong><\/a>: Peter Thaxter, adjunct instructor of psychological science, differentiated self-care from selfishness, explaining why they\u2019re not the same. (Feb. 16, 2024)<\/p>\n

Social Problems from a Human Rights Perspective<\/strong><\/a>: Eric Bonds, professor of sociology, discussed teaching the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and applying its principles to U.S. communities. (Dec. 29, 2023)<\/p>\n

New Traditions<\/strong><\/a>: Mary Beth Mathews, professor of religious studies, explored how the American traditions of Hanukkah and Christmas have evolved over time. (Dec. 15, 2023)<\/p>\n

Believe Your Success<\/strong><\/a>: Alexandra Dunn, professor of management, discussed \u201cimposter syndrome\u201d and its impact on confidence and performance in the workplace. (Oct. 27, 2023)<\/p>\n

AI in the Classroom<\/strong><\/a>: Anand Rao, professor of communication and digital studies, examined the thoughtful use of AI by students, recognizing it as an essential workplace skill. (Oct. 13, 2023)<\/p>\n

Photoshopped<\/strong><\/a>: J.D. Swerzenski, professor of communication and digital studies, addressed the role of AI in photography and its implications. (Sept. 15, 2023)<\/p>\n

America\u2019s Alliances<\/strong><\/a>: Jason Davidson, professor of political science and international affairs, discussed George Washington\u2019s Farewell Address and the complexities of America\u2019s reliance on foreign alliances. (Jul. 21, 2023)<\/p>\n
