Mary Washington again ranks among the nation’s “best and more interesting” in the 2026 Fiske Guide to Colleges.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Once again, the University of Mary Washington has been named by the Fiske Guide to Colleges <\/em>as one of the nation\u2019s \u201cbest and most interesting\u201d public and private four-year institutions. UMW is among 11 Virginia universities featured in the guide\u2019s 2026 edition \u2013 its 42nd issue.<\/p>\n

The bestselling publication describes UMW as \u201cone of the premier public liberal arts and sciences colleges in the country,\u201d attracting students who are \u201cserious about academics, committed to an inclusive community and eager to contribute to the greater good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strong connections between students and faculty remain a hallmark and \u201cgreat source of pride\u201d with 58% of classes having fewer than 20 students. A political science major told Fiske<\/em>, \u201cWe are able to fully participate and not be another number in a room of hundreds.\u201d A biomedical sciences student added, \u201cThe quality of the instructors is so outstanding that students can overcome any obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n

UMW\u2019s sense of community was called \u201cunusually strong,\u201d with students noting peers who are \u201ckind, determined and hungry for academic and cultural knowledge.\u201d One junior said, \u201cTradition is at the heart of UMW, and it\u2019s one of the many things that instills a sense of community here.\u201d Another student cited the wide variety of events, \u201cfrom Tuesday night bingo to live music\u201d as examples of ongoing campus engagement, saying \u201cthere\u2019s always something happening on campus for students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Academic offerings include a liberal arts and sciences core curriculum with a global perspectives and digital-intensive requirement as well as \u201cBeyond the Classroom\u201d\u2013 a faculty-supervised experience, such as research, community engagement, study abroad and internships. A \u201cLife After Mary Washington\u201d component focuses on professional preparation and career readiness.<\/p>\n

The guide also highlights the University\u2019s location in historic Fredericksburg, described by one student as \u201ca lively downtown,\u201d with museums, bookstores, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and more. \u201cIndeed,\u201d the guide notes, \u201cfor an aura of history and tradition, few schools stack up to this small college in Fredericksburg.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few of UMW\u2019s most popular majors \u2013 psychology, biology, English, business and marketing \u2013 are listed alongside strong academic programs in communication and digital studies, education, geography, historic preservation and theatre. The international affairs major is called \u201cnoteworthy,\u201d with UMW\u2019s location \u2013 just over an hour from both Washington, D.C., and Richmond \u2013 cited as a \u201chandy asset for the budding politicos\u201d who seek internships.<\/p>\n

UMW athletics earned mentions for standout varsity and club programs. The guide recognized the 18 Division III Eagles sports teams, an internationally known men\u2019s and women\u2019s rugby program, a growing esports team and an established equestrian program. Top performing squads that \u201cfly high\u201d in their respective conferences include women\u2019s swimming, tennis and volleyball, and men\u2019s soccer and tennis.<\/p>\n

Campus aesthetics also made an impression. Featuring \u201cclassical Jeffersonian buildings, sweeping lawns, brick walkways and breathtaking foliage,\u201d UMW\u2019s setting, the guide notes, has prompted more than one visiting parent to declare, \u201cnow this is what a college should look like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded in 1981 by Edward Fiske, former education editor of The<\/em> New York Times<\/em>, the guide offers updated profiles of more than 300 schools in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. Content is based on campus questionnaires and student interviews, with an emphasis on academics, campus culture and overall college experience \u2013 factors Fiske<\/em> considers families and prospective students most want to know about.<\/p>\n
