\nThe University of Mary Washington will hold a two-day educational event, Alumni College, from Thursday, May 29 to Friday, May 30. “Classes Without Quizzes” is open to the public and showcases faculty and programs from both the College of Arts and Sciences at the Fredericksburg Campus and the College of Graduate and Professional Studies at the Stafford campus.<\/p>
The registration fee of $95 includes lunch, two class sessions and a reception at Brompton on Thursday, as well as breakfast, lunch and three class sessions on Friday. Transportation will be available on Friday to the Stafford campus from the Fredericksburg campus.<\/p>
Claudia Emerson, who is the UMW Arrington chair of poetry and professor of English, will be the keynote speaker at the kick-off luncheon May 29 in Seacobeck Hall at noon. Emerson is the 2006 winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.<\/p>
Topics on Thursday will include: bird identification by Andrew Dolby, associate professor of biology; Islamic civilization and Middle Eastern viewpoints by Nabil Al-Tikriti, assistant professor of history, and Ranjit Singh, assistant professor of political science and international affairs; UMW historic preservation by Doug Sanford and Gary Stanton, associate professors of historic preservation, and Carter Hudgins, Hofer chair of history and American studies; environmental issues in the Chesapeake Bay by Neal Tibert and Charles Whipkey, associate professors of earth and environmental sciences; and Islam in America by Mehdi Aminrazavi, professor of philosophy and religion and director of the Middle Eastern studies program.<\/p>
On Friday, classes will continue at UMW’s Stafford campus and will include: preserving stories of the past and present by Sharon Teabo, assistant professor of education, and Cheryl Hawkinson-Melkun, associate professor of communications and director of the writing center at the Stafford campus; digital mapping by Brian Rizzo, assistant professor of geographic information systems; dealing with change by Laurie B. Abeel, associate professor of education; and communicating effectively by Suzanne de Janasz, associate professor of leadership and management. This first session of UMW’s Alumni College also will feature a tour of the Stafford campus and details about Mary Washington’s travel programs.<\/p>
