These Eagles have spent their college years finding what matters most, rising to challenges and lighting the way for others. Before they take flight, meet some of the seniors whose stories reflect the spirit of the UMW campus community.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-umw-text-image alignfull umw-text-image\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__inner \"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__row\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading umw-intro-title\" id=\"h-from-uncovering-the-past-to-a-future-in-filmmaking\">From Uncovering the Past to a Future in Filmmaking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left umw-intro-content\"><strong>Blake Bauer, Historic Preservation<br><\/strong>Blake Bauer had always dug learning about history. So, when he joined UMW&rsquo;s Department of Historic Preservation &ndash; one of the country&rsquo;s most highly regarded programs in the field &ndash; he knew he&rsquo;d found the right place.<br>By junior year, he&rsquo;d conducted &ldquo;ground-breaking&rdquo; archaeology research aimed at uncovering Mary Washington&rsquo;s gravesite with Assistant Professor of Historic Preservation Katherine Parker and Washington Heritage Museums. &ldquo;I could have never imagined I&rsquo;d be using ground-penetrating radar to search for the final resting place of our University&rsquo;s namesake,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button umw-intro-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/giving.umw.edu\/blog\/2026\/04\/21\/scholarships-drive-umw-senior-toward-digital-storytelling-career\/\">Read Blake&rsquo;s Story<div class=\"arrow\"><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"umw-text-image__image\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__image__inner\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__image__inner__bg\" style=\"background-color:#0067a2\"><\/div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2026\/05\/Snapchat-1661265877-e1777994960227.jpg\" alt=\"Bauer giving a thumbs up with Machu Picchu in the background.\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-umw-text-image alignfull umw-text-image\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__inner umw-text-image--left\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__row\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading umw-intro-title\" id=\"h-growing-into-the-best-version-of-herself\">Growing Into the &lsquo;Best Version&rsquo; of Herself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left umw-intro-content\"><strong>Olivia-Lena De Veaux, Spanish and International Affairs<\/strong><br>University of Mary Washington senior Olivia-Lena De Veaux has traveled to Mexico, Guatemala, and the Czech Republic since coming to college. The trio of trips has instilled confidence and curiosity, she said, but she loves coming back to a campus that feels like home.<br>&ldquo;You can&rsquo;t walk between Combs and Jepson Halls without seeing someone you know,&rdquo; said De Veaux, a double major in Spanish and international affairs from Falls Church, Virginia. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a place overflowing with opportunities to try new things, meet new people and grow into the best version of yourself.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button umw-intro-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/giving.umw.edu\/blog\/2026\/04\/28\/umw-spanish-international-affairs-major-fosters-campus-and-cultural-community\/\">Read Oliva-Lena&rsquo;s Story<div class=\"arrow\"><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"umw-text-image__image\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__image__inner\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__image__inner__bg\" style=\"background-color:#002d61\"><\/div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2026\/05\/Pragues-National-Museum-e1777995225273.jpeg\" alt=\"De Veaux in Prague's National Museum\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-umw-text-image alignfull umw-text-image\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__inner \"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__row\"><div class=\"umw-text-image__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading umw-intro-title\" id=\"h-first-generation-student-umw-matched-my-vibe\">First-Generation Student: &lsquo;UMW Matched My Vibe&rsquo;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left umw-intro-content\"><strong>Mariana Lira, Environmental Science<br><\/strong>Mariana Lira wasn&rsquo;t quite sure where she&rsquo;d go to college, until her grandparents made a simple suggestion&mdash;check out the University of Mary Washington.<br>&ldquo;UMW was warm, welcoming, and totally matched my vibe,&rdquo; said Lira, who was born in Arizona and attended high school in nearby Spotsylvania.
