From technology and campus improvements to fundraising and academic initiatives, Paino reflected on UMW&rsquo;s recent progress and looked ahead to the work that will shape the 2026-27 academic year.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&ldquo;I know how much you care about this place, how much you care about the students,&rdquo; Paino said, acknowledging employees&rsquo; work on behalf of UMW and its students. &ldquo;I know the work that you do each day to help us move forward.&rdquo;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a new Strategic Action Plan approved by the Board of Visitors last spring, the focus now turns to implementation. The plan centers on four priorities: enhancing and adapting UMW&rsquo;s liberal arts mission, energizing campus life and school pride, modernizing campus while preserving its historic beauty, and meeting the future workforce needs of the region and the Commonwealth.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of that work is already underway. UMW has begun a transition to Workday, a new enterprise resource planning system that Paino said will transform how employees access information and support students, providing easier access to data and a single source of information across the University.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial and human resources functions are scheduled to go live next summer, with campuswide training beginning in the spring. Work on the student platform will follow. Paino acknowledged the significant work involved in the transition and asked employees to extend grace to the IT staff and others helping lead the implementation.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across campus, renovations and facility improvements continued through the summer. Ball Hall is ready to welcome students following renovations, with Bushnell Hall next in line for improvements. New locker rooms and work on the Stone House are among the improvements at the Battleground Athletic Complex, while plans move forward for the new theatre and the future of Simpson Library.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paino also pointed to another strong year of fundraising, with more than $14 million raised, including more than $1 million during Mary Wash Day. He thanked employees and supporters for their continued investment in the University and its students.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, Paino addressed how UMW can adapt its liberal arts mission to a rapidly changing world, including the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence. While acknowledging concerns surrounding the technology, he encouraged the University community to consider the enduring human skills students need to develop and how UMW can prepare them to navigate a world increasingly shaped by AI.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&ldquo;Our students are going to have to confront both their work and their lives infused with artificial intelligence,&rdquo; Paino said, emphasizing the importance of preparing them for that future.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meeting workforce needs also remains a priority. Paino pointed to strong enrollment in UMW&rsquo;s new Master of Science in Nursing program as one example of responding to regional demand. He also updated employees on planning for a proposed medical school in partnership with Mary Washington Healthcare.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMW and MWHC are in the investigative and planning stages, working with industry experts to examine facilities, costs, governance, approvals and other requirements.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&ldquo;It is a huge need throughout the Commonwealth to have more healthcare workers,&rdquo; Paino said about the proposed endeavor. &ldquo;This would be a medical school designed for Virginians to serve Virginians, with a mission that serves underserved populations and underserved geographic regions, including the Fredericksburg area.&rdquo;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the new year gets underway, Paino encouraged employees to help build campus pride by showing up for students &ndash; at athletic events, theatre productions, musical performances, art exhibitions and other activities.
