UMW joins a cohort of 10 COPLAC member institutions.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative is led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/gardnerinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Gardner Institute<\/strong><\/a> for Excellence in Higher Education with support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/gates-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gates Foundation<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fall semester project will facilitate an analysis of institutional data to identify key areas of strength, improvements and priorities in conjunction with UMW&rsquo;s 2026-31 strategic action plan. Participation provides UMW access to a structured, evidence&#8209;based process delivered as a national model from the Gardner Institute and designed to help campus leaders set priorities, strengthen academic pathways, and improve student learning, persistence and completion.&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&ldquo;This opportunity offers a framework to look at our processes and engage with our students, from the first and second years through graduation, expanding on our impressive retention rate to understand more details of the student experience and the many contributions to their success,&rdquo; said UMW Chief of Staff and Vice President of Strategy Jeffrey McClurken.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the initiative, institutions receive customized reports, facilitated sensemaking sessions, a strategic prioritization plan and an implementation roadmap aligned with the Gardner Institute&rsquo;s Six Transformation Principles. The initiative at UMW is led by Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Student Affairs, and Academic Success and Integrity, with input from numerous staff and faculty on campus.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&ldquo;The Gardner Institute is unique in how they collect information from campuses by garnering insights from those individuals working directly with students and with campus leaders setting strategies and priorities,&rdquo; said UMW Dean for Academic Success and Integrity Wes Hillyard. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a leveled approach that leads to level-setting and better understanding.&rdquo;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Led by the Gardner Institute and its partners, this national initiative equips institutions with the tools, insights and strategic direction needed to make meaningful, lasting improvements in student outcomes. UMW is participating through its membership in COPLAC. The analysis will examine the student experience and identify areas of strength at one of the nation&rsquo;s leading public liberal arts institutions, with key insights into the experiences of students across the Commonwealth.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&ldquo;My Gardner Institute colleagues and I are honored and excited to partner with COPLAC in this important work,&rdquo; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andrew-koch-788a702\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Koch<\/a>, chief executive officer of the Gardner Institute. &ldquo;Our experience &ndash; supported by external evaluation of our work &ndash; shows that programs, while necessary, are not enough on their own to produce lasting gains in student learning and success.
