The varied titles and career fields are part of the appeal, as the program spans leadership roles across industries, offering working professionals ways to apply technology to business problems, rather than developing the technology itself.

“More and more products that my teams produce use AI, and in order to be able to evaluate their output, I knew I needed a better understanding of the mechanics underlying the models and the results. I need to know how the sausage is made,” said Patrick McGarrity, owner and CEO at PMW in Dahlgren, who has more than 25 years of experience working with NASA and the Department of Defense.

That’s why the graduate program teaches more than technical knowledge. Students in the MS in AI in Business program at UMW combine courses in organizational strategy, data visualization, decision making, leadership and organizational behavior, and ethics and governance. Many of the graduate students start their required courses with Python for Business Analytics, a challenging class that is essentially an eight-week course in learning a new language. The fast pace sets the momentum for the program — which can be completed in one calendar year full-time by coupling classes or in two years part-time, by taking one course each eight-week term. The degree requires 30 credit hours.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="552" data-attachment-id="111249" data-permalink="https://www.umw.edu/news/2026/10/06/ms-in-ai-in-business-starts-up-at-umw-through-interdisciplinary-and-industry-spanning-courses/ms-in-ai-class-photo-august-28/" data-orig-file="https://www.umw.edu/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2026/10/MS-in-AI-class-photo-August-28.png" data-orig-size="1633,881" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta='{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0","alt":""}' data-image-title="" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Students in the inaugural Master of Science in AI in Business program at UMW bring a range of professional backgrounds and leadership roles to the virtual classroom. You also have to have the full-orbed understanding of how to apply it and how to lead transformation.”

The courses encourage students to apply their knowledge to their work, with several culminating in capstone projects to give them an opportunity to solve the real-world business problems they face everyday.

“Part of the thrill is finding automation opportunities with my team. About four weeks ago, I launched an effort to inventory all our tasks and pinpoint the ones with the most ROI potential. Lo and behold, that was our first assignment toward our capstone,” said Philip Hadwin, program manager at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) in Arlington.

Throughout the courses, students have an opportunity to reflect on the use of AI, it’s benefits and challenges.

“AI is changing business practices these days but requires critical thinking and analysis to ensure it is being used ethically and efficiently. I’d prefer to be part of an ethical solution than a problem by figuring out good business cases from the get-go,” said Stephanie Creasy, director of Cybersecurity, National Security Division at Revolutional, based in McLean. For Creasy, the MS in AI in Business will be her second degree from Mary Washington, as the 2005 graduate also earned a BA in English.

For Bill Davis, an IT cybersecurity specialist who served in the United States Marine Corps, the degree will be from a new alma mater and fit seamlessly into his career trajectory. “As a long-time Fredericksburg resident working in federal cybersecurity, Mary Washington is the ideal place to continue my education. I’m proud to be joining the UMW community,” he noted.

“After 40 years in IT and cybersecurity, this program gives me the AI skills I need to accelerate decision-making and improve outcomes in my federal role. It’s already helping me work more efficiently and deliver stronger results.”

While students dive deeper into AI and spend much of their class time online in the fully online, asynchronous program, the human connection is an important aspect of the program. Within the first weeks of classes, the inaugural cohort of 23 students found ways to connect to each other, comparing notes over challenging assignments and taking a moment to toast their progress in graduate school.

“For me, this program was the perfect blend, a balance of analytical know-how coupled with the strategic decision-making you learn with an MBA,” said McGarrity, who first heard of Mary Washington as a rival college to his undergraduate alma mater St Mary’s College of Maryland. For graduate school, it’s the perfect fit.

“With kids and work, I thought asynchronous would be the most convenient, but the most beneficial aspect so far is how accessible the professors have been, which is hugely important in an asynchronous environment,” McGarrity said.

Faculty in the MS in AI in Business program include experts on computer science, entrepreneurship, financial management, leadership and organizational behavior, and marketing strategy. Program Director and Professor of Quantitative Business Methods Christopher Garcia leads the AI Language Models course, and Professor of Communication and Director of the Center for AI in the Liberal Arts Anand Rao offers a course on AI Solutions for Business. The interdisciplinary approach is unique to Mary Washington, building on a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences, and centering the work in business.

Learn more about the MS in AI in Business degree at UMW and apply for classes starting in the next term or semester.

byThe new Master of Science in AI in Business is in its startup year at the University of Mary Washington, and the first-of-its-kind graduate program in Virginia is already attracting entrepreneurs and business owners, project managers and business analysts, account executive and directors, as well as engineers and vice presidents.
