Robert Nutting, chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Pirates and a newspaper and resort executive, has been selected as executive-in-residence at the University of Mary Washington for the fall semester.<\/p>\n
Nutting will visit the university’s Stafford campus on Wednesday, November 10 and the Fredericksburg campus on Thursday, November 11. During his residence, he will meet with faculty and students, as well as speak to regional business leaders during a community breakfast.<\/p>\n
In addition to overseeing a major league baseball team, Nutting serves as president and chief executive officer of Ogden Newspapers Inc., a diversified media corporation in Wheeling, W. Va., and as president and chief executive officer of Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Seven Springs, Pa.<\/p>\n
Nutting supports several philanthropic endeavors, including serving as chairman of the Pirates Charities, which offers support to more than 2,000 community organizations.<\/p>\n
Currently, Nutting serves on the board of directors at the Carnegie Natural History Museum in Pittsburgh, is a board member and treasurer of the Newspaper Association of America, serves as chairman of the board for The Linsly School and serves on the board of Bethany College. In addition, Nutting is a former president of the West Virginia Press Association and is past chairman of the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Nutting was awarded the “Light of the Valley Award” from the Wheeling YMCA in recognition of his exemplary community service on behalf of Ohio Valley’s youth.<\/p>\n
Nutting earned a bachelor’s degree in American history from Williams College in Massachusetts. His mother, Betty “Snookie” Woods Nutting, is a Mary Washington alumna and currently serves on the UMW Foundation Board.<\/p>\n
The UMW Executive-in-Residence Program, established in 1989, provides students from all academic disciplines of the university the opportunity to interact with well-known and established leaders in the corporate world and enhances students’ knowledge of the free enterprise system. The program also provides the university a chance to encourage increased involvement and interaction of local business leaders in the institution’s life.<\/p>\n
