During Beak Week in March 2012, students volunteered to build picnic tables for Habitat for Humanity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The University of Mary Washington has been named to the President\u2019s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the third consecutive year.\u00a0 UMW is one of 642 U.S. colleges and universities recognized for engaging students, faculty and staff in substantial, relevant and meaningful service to communities.<\/p>\n

The honor, presented to UMW\u2019s Community Outreach and Resources (COAR), was awarded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.<\/p>\n

The more than 500 students in COAR volunteered 6,815 hours in the community during the 2010-2011 academic year. UMW assisted dozens of local agencies, schools and hospitals, including Habitat for Humanity, for an economic impact of more than $145,000.<\/p>\n

Students helped with tornado relief in Tennessee as part of an Alternative Spring Break trip in 2012<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In 2011, COAR was honored at the University of Mary Washington Leadership Awards, receiving the Outstanding Overall Achievement for a Club or Organization Award, as well as the Outstanding Philanthropy Program Award.\u00a0 During spring break in March 2012, the organization sent 51 students to Wilmington, N.C., Avery County, N.C., and Cookeville, Tenn., as part of Alternative Spring Break trips with Habitat for Humanity.<\/p>\n
