{"id":38751,"date":"2012-03-21T14:33:57","date_gmt":"2012-03-21T18:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/?p=38751"},"modified":"2012-03-21T14:33:57","modified_gmt":"2012-03-21T18:33:57","slug":"umw-department-of-foreign-languages-to-present-fourth-annual-world-language-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2012\/03\/21\/umw-department-of-foreign-languages-to-present-fourth-annual-world-language-day\/","title":{"rendered":"UMW Department of Foreign Languages Presented Fourth Annual World Language Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, March 24, University of Mary Washington\u2019s Department of Modern Foreign Languages gave area high school students a chance to see what they offer through the Fourth Annual World Language Day, an annual outreach program dedicated to the appreciation and study of foreign languages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38761\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38761\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2012\/03\/21\/umw-department-of-foreign-languages-to-present-fourth-annual-world-language-day\/wld-photo-1-spanish-language-coordinator-itxaso-del-olmo-leads-participants-in-capoeira-a-brazilian-martial-arts-form\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38761\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/03\/WLD-photo-1-Spanish-Language-Coordinator-Itxaso-del-Olmo-leads-participants-in-Capoeira-a-Brazilian-martial-arts-form.-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38761\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spanish Language Coordinator Itxaso del Olmo leads participants in Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts form<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On World Language Day, more than 100 high school students from across Virginia spent a day at the university participating in competitions in foreign languages.<\/p>\n<p>Marcel Rotter, founder of the event and associate professor of German, was inspired to start the event when he witnessed a day celebrating German language and culture at the University of Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that it seemed like something we should have here at Mary Washington, but I decided to include everyone by having all the major languages,\u201d said Rotter.<\/p>\n<p>With a whole day dedicated to languages, the event reinforces how important languages are at UMW and shows potential future students what the UMW foreign language department can offer them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping that the students who come to World Language Day would consider UMW for their studies, and major in foreign languages,\u201d said Rotter.<\/p>\n<p>While on the Fredericksburg campus for the event, the visiting students will receive a full UMW experience, with a tour of the campus, admissions information and greeting from President Richard V. Hurley. The visitors also will get to meet UMW faculty, staff and students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38771\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38771\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2012\/03\/21\/umw-department-of-foreign-languages-to-present-fourth-annual-world-language-day\/wld-photo-2-umw-hand-percussion-club-performs-as-wld-participants-look-on\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38771\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38771\" src=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/files\/2012\/03\/WLD-photo-2-UMW-Hand-Percussion-Club-performs-as-WLD-participants-look-on.-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UMW Hand Percussion Club performs for World Language Day participants<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mary Washington students who are serious in their language studies will share how much languages have impacted them through experiences like studying abroad or participating in the Peace Corps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love World Language Day because I get to share my foreign language experiences with high school kids who love languages and culture as much as I do,\u201d said sophomore Charlotte Johnson, an international affairs and German major. \u201cIt&#8217;s also great to see all the creative things they come up with and hang out with students who are interested in other languages than the ones I am familiar with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rotter hopes that participants in the event will take away more than an increased knowledge and appreciation of languages.
