{"id":86685,"date":"2016-09-13T10:58:03","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T14:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/?p=86685"},"modified":"2019-10-14T17:51:45","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T21:51:45","slug":"farnsworth-receives-national-political-science-association-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2016\/09\/13\/farnsworth-receives-national-political-science-association-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Farnsworth Receives National Political Science Association Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the UMW Center for Leadership and Media Studies, was recognized for his dedication and service to Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, at the American Political Science Association Conference earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteve has long been a champion of Pi Sigma Alpha, and for 20 years has supported its mission of recognizing student excellence in political science,\u201d said Sean Twombly, executive director of Pi Sigma Alpha.\u00a0 \u201cAs president, Steve helped shape new programming that emphasizes the importance of student research and its place in the undergraduate curriculum. The impact of this work will be felt for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farnsworth is a sought-after political commentator on subjects ranging from presidential politics to local Virginia congressional race. He has been widely featured in national media, including <em>The Washington Post,<\/em> <em>Reuters<\/em>, <em>The Chicago Tribune<\/em> and <em>MSNBC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He is also the author or co-author of five\u00a0books: <em>The Global President: International Media and the U.S. Government; Spinner in Chief: How Presidents Sell Their Policies and Themselves<\/em>, <em>The Nightly News Nightmare: Media Coverage of U.S. Presidential Elections, 1988-2008<\/em>, <em>The Mediated Presidency: Television News and Presidential Governance<\/em> and <em>Political Support in a Frustrated America.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Farnsworth has taught at UMW for 17 years, where he established the Center for Leadership and Media Studies in 2012.\u00a0 The University honored him with three e teaching awards: the Alumni Association Outstanding Young Faculty Member Award, the Mary W. Pinschmidt Teaching Award and the Richard Palmieri Outstanding Professor Award. He has also taught at Georgetown, McGill and George Mason universities.<\/p>\n<p>Pi Sigma Alpha is the national political science honor society, with more than 800 chapters nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Farnsworth, professor of
